United Airlines Furloughs 290 pilots

I flew with an Eagle captain that was a United furloughee.

That gives you an idea of how he views recall at United.

I had a United jumpseater on board a while back who seemed to think that United's on more than borrowed time and vultures picking the carcass is imminent.

Sad.

I couldn't imagine the feeling of - perhaps - being on board a sinking ship with no life raft, life jacket, or any approaching ship to help provide some aid.

:o

Apparently the furloughs go back to 2000 or 1999. Ten years at a major airline and nothing to show for it.:eek:

In 1999, the "smart money" was on quitting American, Delta, SWA, UPS etc and going to United.

Lots of folks did that from a number of other companies.

Remember when some of you guys go "Aww, dad, times are different now!" when it comes to jumping from fashionable carrier to fashionable carrier?

A guy from my 727 new hire class that did just that is probably getting his pink slip.

All things aside, if I was at United this whole time, I would have been working on plan B. If this airline goes under, and your a pilot left without a job, your not too bright. You had the writing on the wall for almost a decade and did nothing about it. My heart goes out to them.

I caught a jumpseat on a United A320 the other day.

The airplane was spotless, and the crew was spectacular and totally accommodating.

They deserve better than this.

Remember orientation at PRC oh so long ago? The one that opened with "Did you know that a United 747-400 international Captain makes over $350,000/year? That could be YOU. Welcome to PRC....."

How times have changed.

That was before Larry Risely said, "If I wasn't gettin' rid of dem Carruh VANs, I'd hire all y'all" ;)

If a certain regional company's largest mainline partner disappears, the same can be said for the regional company's subsidiary's pilots.
