Uniform Shirts & Garters...

OK...

I've finally had enough of the big billowing uniform shirt with the ten-times-too-large-flying-nun arm holes as well.

I'm taking them into the Men's Warehouse next week and getting them tailored.

My question is this... may sound strange to some of you but if you were in the Military then you'll know what I'm talking about.

Has anyone used Shirt/Sock Garters while flying the line? Specifically I need to know if they set off the metal detectors at security.

For those of you that don't know... these are elastic straps that connect your shirt tails to the top of your socks. They keep your shirt tucked in and your socks up.

This appearance is very "squared away", and I'm thinking about using them at work... but don't want the bells and whistles going off and the pat down after the wanding with questioning looks when I hike up my pants leg to show them the garters...

The TSA, in all its infinate wisdom, has not standardized the metal detectors, so what might go through at one airport fine, might set off all the detectors in a 10 block radius at another airport. So, good luck with those!

Re: Uniform Shirts & Garters...

Ya know Bob, I get the same thing with my "ultra-high quailty" Cintas shirts, and it's drivin' me nuts too. I think the ones at the Company store are a bit better cut, as well as having a bit thicker fabric, although they still need tailoring. Any idea what the drive out price is for having the shirts tailored?

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah... That part I know... but some things just never set it off. For example, my stainless steel Luminox Navy Seals watch, My silver and gold Cross Pen, my flight wings, my tie tack, my little red book in my back pocket with the metal binding, and my belt buckle. I can always go through the detectors with these things... Never a problem. If I have too much change in my pocket... or I forgot to put my cell phone clip or sunglasses in the tray, then "Whoop, Whoop, Whoop!", "Please step over here sir...", "Male Assist!".

I know some belt buckles, pens, watches, etc... tend to set them off. At least I think they do because I've flown with many a Capt. who practically undress every time we go through Security.

So... just looking to see if this is one of those things that have a "tendancy" to make the detectors go off.

Jim,

I believe it will be @ $10.00/shirt... I'll let you know exactly next Tuesday.

My belt buckle sets off the detectors at PDX and SFO. The goons always think my watch is going to set them off and it never does. HA!

Re: Uniform Shirts & Garters...

My ID badge set it off in SBP a couple weeks ago. That one shocked my whole crew!

Re: Uniform Shirts & Garters...

I'd think tailoring would be sufficient. Shirt garters are great when you're standing up, but annoying when you're sitting down. If you're THAT concerned with it, look into one of those "hidden tailor" belts that are worn underneath your pants. More comfortable than shirt garters, and being made of nothing but rubber, less likely to set off the detectors (though these days, ya never know).

my stainless steel Luminox Navy Seals watch,

Luminox makes a good watch!

Re: Uniform Shirts & Garters...

If I took off my ID, watch & keys I never had a problem anywhere.

That damned ID for some reason ALWAYS set off the metal detectors.

I used to work for LL Bean... we got quite a deal on them... I have two. One for work... One for play.

Now I've probably turned this thread into a "Best watch for flying" thread... Don't go there folks... It's been done before! I'm just responding to MikeD!

You know, on good quality uniform pants, there's usually a band of rubber strips on the inside of the waist. They do a very good job of keeping your shirt down.

BTW, on that note, stay off that "Pilots Gone Wild: Detroit" DVD

But on that note, I can imagine putting a *giggle* garter on every day would get old exceptionally fast.

If your ID is one that you wave next to a detector to get access, then it has a small microchip in it, which probably has enough metal to set off the detectors if they're set to the ultra-high paranoid setting. That or the goons are pushing the button to make the alarm go off when you walk through it.

Hmm, my old ORD ramp badge wasn't a 'waving' one, it did however have a strip for swiping. (Swipe badge, enter secret Jedi code, open door). Maybe that's what did it?

Re: Uniform Shirts & Garters...

Yeah the stripe could do it. Probably only if they have the detector set to the ultra anal-retentive paranoid setting.

Re: Uniform Shirts & Garters...

The only things on me that set off the detector is my watch (50% of the time) and my cell phone. I even walked through EWR with a quarter in my pocket last week and it didn't go off. Maybe I'm just lucky with those things.

I wore shirt-stays in the CAP, and I don't think they'd set off the detectors. Just as long as you don't have lots of other metal on.

I'm a pretty anal guy about having my shirt tucked in, but I always figured the shirt stays were too much. Too uncomfortable. So I bought all tapered pilot shirts (from www.pilotshirts.com), an have the rubber strip in my pants around the waist. The shirts stay in well, and don't appear "poofy." I think if you have the rubber band, and the tapered shirts, it will help a lot.

I think the way you tuck your shirt helps a lot too. I fold the backs over in a way that keeps the shirt from bunching up, which looks good. Sort of a fold on each side on my back. Hard to explain without pictures. But it helps a lot!

Re: Uniform Shirts & Garters...

I know exactly what your talking about with the fold! I do the fold!

Anyway... Looks like the tapering will help... I'll probably have to sew in some rubber strips to my current pants... I just can't stand the Cintas Uniform pants so I bought some ultra comfy Haggars at JcPenney.

Thanks for the info folks!
