Unemployment Paid Training

Has anyone ever done this? Got laid off and applied for Government paid flight training?? Does this even exist... Ive been hearing from some folks that if you get laid off you can apply for government paid training if it helps progress you in your specific field of work... Any info would be cool... If you don't want to discuss it here you can PM me...

I'm going through it right now in NY state, but for something else. I'm applying for training for something other than flying. However, yes it is possible. For me being an ATP I would have been able to go to a state funded course in TX for a 737 type rating. I found out by going to my states Dept of Labor office and showing interest.

It would make sense, but in our neck of the woods they only support you if you would like to train a medical coder or nurse (which the latter would require me to shave my legs, and I won't).

Gotta check around, but am pretty sure it varies from state to state and is highly restricted. It would already help to get a government supported loan to add more quals (like CFI/CFII/MEI) but from what I have learned that is "notta optschion".

:(

I tried in MA and the short answer is NO. If I wanted to drive a truck I could get into a CDL class in a week. Aviation is a no go, as far as I could find, and I tried damn hard for a couple of months.

I got part of my commercial funded by the Alaska Department of Workforce Development. $7000 grant. Look around, there are a ####load of programs.

That would be awesome if they funded flight training
They do. I know several guys that got types or recurrents through the program. I even know of guys that got x hours of 172 and Duchess time through the program. I've been told "no" twice recently for recurrent. I'm pitching a new initial now, but it's not going so well.

The key is, don't take "no" for an answer. Be annoying. Be persistent.

Mintour, Are you doing it through a Career Center? I beat the Vet rep up in there pretty good and kept getting nowhere. I saw that they fund 737 and CE 500 types but I need cash to finish up CAX and CFI.

When I was finishing my BBA a few years back, there was a guy in one of my classes that had been recently laid off from his job and had received some kind of a grant to assist with tuition. I'm not sure they would assist with flight training unless you were enrolled in a program where there was some reasonable assurance it would lead to you getting a job in aviation. Using it to finish a PPL or even an instrument rating at your local FBO probably wouldn't qualify.

Where did you see they fund 737 initial?

I was told they "don't train pilots" so getting money for a CFI or Commercial may be tough. But getting money for a type (if you sell it properly) isn't "training pilots", it's "enhancing someone's qualifications to allow them to obtain gainful employment". That's the angle I'm going at it.

"Well, sir. Seeing as how I was furloughed, I can sit around on the government dime for the next 6 months...or I can go to this job and make $x thousand a year if I only had this training (present type rating information). All I need is a little bit of help financially to get it done. I know there are programs out there. How can you help me?"

I've been bouncing from supervisor to supervisor in PA and Ohio trying to get a CE-500 recurrent paid for or a CE-525S type. It's a very interesting process.

Like I said, I know when I was running the flight school we had a few guys come in just for "recurrent" in things like 172s, Bonanzas, Duchesses (Duchi?), etc. We never got anyone to come in and get assistance finishing up a Commercial or CFI though. ...not to say that we didn't train for an additional CFI (MEI) rating for the guys coming in for "recurrent".

Very interesting mini, thanks for sharing!

My CFI expired, is there a way to get some money through the WIA to get it renewed so I can at least work as a CFI since nobody else is hiring...

You're going to have to show that you'll have a job after getting your renewal. If you can show that you'll get a job making $x and the expense is $y, then you may get it.

Check out your state's unemployment website to begin. You do NOT have to be unemployed to get WIA money...believe it or not, you can get money while you're employed to go get a better job. Your best bet is to start in April-ish...FY ends in July, so if they have money it's use it or lose it. No sense in losing it. Down side is if the money is gone then you're SOL.

Good luck.
