I once knew a guy who owned and flew his own airplane for years without a single rating (in and out of the country no less). He eventually got his private and instrument ratings, but he flew for years without them. He was the same guy who was convinced that he would get his multi private and then buy a King Air or a Conquest and fly his family back and forth to the Northwest from Florida. With zero turbine experience. Some people that have money are brilliant, others are completely logic-defyingly moronic. I recommended he go to Flight Safety and pay to have a safety pilot ride along until he had a handle on things. He would hear none of that. "But it doesn't require a type rating, how hard can it be"? Me: "They're actually pretty easy to fly, until one of your engines quits and your over the Tetons".
 
I remember hearing about a King Air that CFIT just outside of Phoenix trying to stay under the Bravo at night with a completely unlicensed and relatively untrained owner/"operator"

It probably happens alot more than we think ...

I know this guy, he has been in trouble plenty of times around the airport in the past. So glad someone finally caught him.

Last year there was a line guy at the local FBO who was better at networking than getting certificates. He got a job flying a Pilates, and then wound up flying a citation single pilot, all on his private without an instrument rating.

He used to say things at times that didn't make sense but I'd dismiss it thinking he was inexperienced and overly enthusiastic. I was correct, he was just more inexperienced than I realized.

I heard his private was suspended for a year, but no criminal charges.

I guess that proves the old saying he Citation is he easiest plane to fly. my father calls it the Osteryzer Blender.
 
As long as you don't have any systems or mechanical errors, flying just about any airplane is simple enough for most private pilots to accomplish if they know what the switches and instruments are for.

I'm right here with a 16 year old (Solo endorsement in hand) that has flown about 70 hours of "solo" time but actually has less than 1 in the airplane by himself. He'll go out on weekend trips with passengers. It's the really cool toy his Dad bought for him.
One day............:(
 
On a more serious note. I once knew a guy that owned a swordfish boat out of Long Beach who found out you could catch more fish using a plane. So he got a 150 and soloed in it. That was all he needed to go spot fishes.
