HOUSTON -- A 14-year-old girl has been questioned about a stillborn fetus found in an airplane's trash bin, officials told KPRC Local 2.
Houston police said a cleaning crew found the fetus in a lavatory after flight 433 from New York's LaGuardia Airport arrived at George Bush Intercontinental Airport at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Investigators said the fetus was discovered at about 5:15 p.m., nearly 15 minutes after passengers got off the aircraft.
The fetus was taken to the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office, where it was determined the fetus was not viable, officials said.
Investigators said that since the fetus was not alive when it was delivered, there is no evidence that any laws were broken.
"We’re going to continue getting all the information we can, give it over to the District Attorney's Office and allow the district attorney to decide whether or not they’re going to file any criminal charges," Sgt. Ryan Chandler said.
Investigators said the mother was returning from New York with a chaperoned school group. She told them she did not know she was pregnant.
The girl was found through interviews with other passengers.
"We're dealing with a scared child," Officer Keith Lovelace said.
The FBI is involved in the investigation.
