UAL HQ Relocation Discussion

Can you elaborate on that? What was given up?

There was a hard 2.5 mile radius on the domicile location. The workgroup would have to approve any change to the domicile location, it would be an individual negotiation and vote if / when it came up.

Not only did they do that in the last LOA. They also allowed the company a provision to move the domicile at their whim anywhere within 50 miles by only paying a set amount of days of per-diem. They also allowed provisions for a move greater than 50 miles, it just triggers a move package.

The "raise" was laughable for those concessions, but what do I know. I'm just one no vote.

The reason Houston isn’t being considered as a potential move location, especially for the NOC, can be summed up in exactly one word: hurricanes.
Personally I find that worth competing with for no state income tax and much better temperatures year round. Besides a hurricane lets you know it's coming which leaves time to send a bug out team to a back up facility.

There are certainly things I miss about living in Texas, winters and the lower cost of living among them, but I surely don't miss the summers and humidity.

With regards to the state income tax though, you again have to consider what management cares about. They don't really care if employees are paying more of their paycheck in taxes/rent or not, but if they can choose a location where weather events are limited to blizzards over ones that can cause infrastructure damage requiring a temporary office move... they'll go with the blizzards.

Thus why I stated it was my personal opinion. I do understand that the executive suite could give 2 craps about employee living costs in a large scale HQ move.

This and floods. Also mosquitos big enough to pick up and carry your first born off, nasty temps of upper 90s-100s with high, high humidity 2/3 of the year. No thanks. I left as soon as I could. Meanwhile CO has amazing Spring - Fall temps with a dry climate. I never had a mosquito bite there, no massive cockroaches either which you’ll see in Houston. And yes it gets cold and snows but unless you’re in the mountains, it snows a few inches in Denver itself and melts within a day. Dry powdery snow too, not usually very icy. Temps go from the 30-50s most of winter but can even get up to 70s at times, and it’s only severely cold for a short time being sunny most days too.

I will say Houston has awesome food though. So much variety and flavor from around the world. One of the best foodie cities I ever lived. I do miss that. Texas isn’t really as cheap as it used to be. So many corporations and people are flocking here that cost of living has skyrocketed. So that’s not even a good argument anymore for Texas. Having no state income tax is pretty good, but we do have some of the highest property taxes in the US now as well.

What were you all thinking extending your outdated contract? IIRC Southwest ratified their industry leading contract in terms of hours worked, pay, JA, benefits, etc right around the time UA decided to extend their below average contract. Why?

My favorite part of this is the thematic political disclosure via texts.

But, sarcastic shot aside, I'd be interested if the NOC stayed in Arlington Heights, HQ went to Denver, and the lease in Willis tower is neither extended nor revisited. Keep Illinois, expand in Colorado, and get situated even if it solely became a secondary NOC (even though you guys already had an awesome offsite location IIRC).

I feel like this is the most likely scenario, like someone else said, the NOC is brand new. Doesnt the CEO live in WY? Would be an easier commute for him if they decide to move HQ to DEN lol

The NOC is a former Motorola warehouse that UAL put a sub floor sitting 2 feet off of a concrete floor to allow HVAC and electrical underneath. Threw up some drywall to divide the ops floor from the breakroom and just a handful of manager offices. Then had a drop ceiling strung up. That hardly constitutes as "new". All formerly announced 'upgrade' projects on site, have been halted.

I love how the higher ups constantly tout the "world class AH NOC" when as you stated, it's literally a warehouse lol
