Traveling Laptop

I have a 15" MacBook Pro and have Windows 7 on it.

Oh yeah? I didn't know you could run that OS on a Mac. The last Mac I owned was the Mac Classic in the early 90's and it was good but I later abandoned it because more software was developed ibm compatible style. That is really cool though that you can run 7. Is this a factory option you can get or is this something you installed yourself?

There are window 7 programs you can buy that either dual boot the machine or run on-top of the OSX and imulate windows.

Apple's software to do this is called Boot Camp and it is a part of OS X. Windows license/software not included. You can also buy VMware Fusion if you don't feel like rebooting all the time. (I don't!)

Just get an acer for the fraction of the cost of a mac laptop. A traveling laptop does not need to cost over $1000. Not to mention the need to buy a second OS because the one pre installed is insufficient for your needs

I have a Toshiba Portege R705. It's lighter than a mac and has a pretty decent battery life!

Bootcamp ships with all the Mac Pro's. Then you choose to boot into Windows or Mac. I personally don't find an issue booting into either one as it only take 30 seconds to boot. If you need to swap back and forth a lot then VM Ware's emmulator is better as it runs Windows as a Window in the Mac OS. NOTE: You will need a FULL version of Windows though to do this. They don't include that. If you are like and have owned PC's forever you will have a copy or two of Windows laying around.

Also IMO Apple's suspend feature is the fastest I have ever seen. I have close the lid on my laptop have it suspend then come back 2 days later and it resumes in about 3 seconds or less.

Snappy power management makes me happy. Can't stand twiddling my thumbs waiting for Windows to suspend to disk.

I'm on a 23 day trip. I really really would prefer to have a fully-featured laptop (MacBook Pro in my case). I don't have Windows on my system, by the way; no real need for it.

I'm in the market to get a new laptop. There are so many options out there right now and I'm trying to narrow down my search. I'm curious to here if anyone has any good or bad comments on laptops they have or have had before or suggestions.

I'm looking for an actual laptop (not tablet or netbook). The max size I want is 14". I mainly use the laptop for internet, Microsoft office and outlook, Logbook Pro, Email, Pictures, and watching movies off netflix. Of coarse it has to be able to handle the pilot life style, portable but able to with stand living inside of luggage.

Thanks!

Someone tell me how a $450 PC will do this noticably worse than a $999 Mac? Also, is Logbook Pro worth having to pay an extra $189.99?

Paying nearly 3 times more for a Mac to complete such a simple mission is careless. Reckless if you need to use credit :p.

I own a $450 PC laptop and a $1300 MacBook Pro. The Mac blows the PC out of the water in every way, and it's not close.

It's kind of like making the argument that a $12,000 Kia would do the same job as a $50,000 BMW, so the BMW would be a waste of money. Personally, I like having nice things from time to time, which is why I bought the Mac. Life would be awfully boring if it was all about being thrifty. :)

Ok, so at $1300 why settle for a new BMW when you could have a new Ferrari at nearly the same price point?

Also you cheated. You are not comparing it to a $999 mac like I had asked :p

When it comes to the mission set out by this guy, going overboard with a $1000+ laptop is a bit much.

You don't have to take your ipad out of the bag for the TSA. Apparently this is true for the macbook air too. Any truth to this? If so this is the laptop I would buy.

If it does not have user changeable bays/battery generally it doesn't need to come out. I also use a tab with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard...

Its nice that the MacBook battery lasts so long, shame its hackable now though :-)

MAC hands down has beaten all three of my previous PC laptops. For me it was worth the investment and a writeoff. If it lasts me 5-7 years then I will be happy with it, so far I have no indications it won't.

IMO Logbook Pro is worth the investment. I have used the program for over a decade and evaluated several others but still like Logbook Pro the best. But then again I am slightly biased to Logbook Pro now.
