Travel to Munich

I have friend that is looking to travel to Munich. They found very cheap fares on Lot and an Turkish Air.

How is their product?

How is there safety record?

The Lot product is somehow average. Nothing special, their safty record is o.k. TK is on my personal no fly list. A lot of their local flight crew are ex military. I've recognized a certain "Top Gun" mentality....
 
If you have to change planes in Istanbul you can plan to change gates at least 3 times.

Schedules are more just guidelines in the Middle East.

Do NOT fly on Turkish unless you want some action, their safety record is deplorable:

I just flew Turkish round trip to Istanbul. The flight crews and FA's seemed excellent. The gate agents were terrible. 9 hour delay at JFK cause of snow in Istanbul and the gate agents weren't giving anyone the slightest bit of info. Flight diverted from Istanbul to Trabzone due to said snow. My wife was waiting at Attaturk airport for me and the airline never let anyone know we had diverted. She found out 2 hours later when we landed at the divert airport.

So -- better than my last two international flights on United. 11 hour delay. I would say the gate agents were bad, but they weren't actually at the gate either time.

Had to go to the United Club to get rebooked. Which is guess kind of sucks to have to pay to see an agent, but then again, at least we were rebooked. Everyone else was stuck another day.

At least when we got to our divert, which was to a Black Sea coastal town across the sea from Sochi, Russia, they put us up in a real nice hotel for the night. But then they told us the last bus to the airport leaves at 5am, so we were all down there by 430 but didn't board the busses til 930 lol

Last time through Istanbul enroute to MUC, bombing at the airport, returning to Iraq at end of same trip, Military Coup.

Flew THY business class a few times out of Iraq to MUC and wasn't impressed. Older aircraft, lots of holding into Istanbul, kind of unruly in the back with not a lot of action from the crew, etc.

Much preferred going the "wrong way" to Doha or Dubai first, then backtrack to MUC on QTR or Emirates.

Love Munich, heading there for 3 weeks in early April....Well actually back the Berchtesgaden, 2 hours SE (see above pic).

I have a dream of retiring to Berchtesgaden. Went to the AFRC hotel there as a kid, then when I was playing junior hockey we had a week of training camp there in the late summer. I really want to go do some hiking around the national park.

How about you convince your buds that, since you're an American pilot, to throw caution to the wind and use a US carrier? :)

It's about jobs, yes? :)
 
I would argue that Istanbul is one the few places in the world that scares me.

Really? I had a great time there 2 weeks ago. It's a massive city and has its good and bad parts like any others. I was shocked at how the part I was in reminded me of Manhattan.
