Torches!

Sorry guys, that was a joke, if you didn’t catch that :)

Here is the full video Northwest Airlines Adventures from Yesteryear

edit: for the impatient types, fast forward to 38:15, or just enjoy the entire video
Damn, part of me can't believe you found that old vid on YouTube. I guess one can find "anything" on YouTube. I seem to remember watching that a hangar party back in the 90s (projected onto a screen... remember screens? and projectors?)

hah yeah, I think the last time I looked at a projector was maybe ground school when I was doing my private, or perhaps sometime in college. Can't remember how I found it, but those dudes are from a different time (and pretty funny)

Does Cordova count as an austere environment? You can't even get the iPad updating until you go into the little outhouse crew shack and enter some password into the wifi. :)

I still have an 8mm projector that works with a multitude of reels full of my parents (both sides) youth. I wish some sound would've been available back then, I have no idea who I'm looking at when I play them (other than my parents, although my mom is an identical twin so sometimes I'm not sure), I miss the way back times when my grandparents would show the movies and narrate. I miss those old farts, they were fun. My youth was recorded on VHS, my dad had an early setup, the camera was hand carried and connected by a cable to the VCR that hung from a shoulder carried sling with huge rechargeable batteries, I think altogether the whole setup probably weighed about 65 lbs. I have stacks of videotapes in storage that are probably ruined by time, but before he died he digitized most of the important stuff onto CDs. Now I have a stack of 8mm reels and a stack of CDs. I actually like the projector, every time I can get it to work properly I consider it a victory over time.

I appreciate all the of recommendations. There was some good advice in the thread. And because I like gadgets and stuff, I decided to get two flashlights.

I picked up a JetBeam E10R and then something that WASN'T recommended here but I found while searching....a NiteCore TUP.

I decided that variable brightness was a good idea, (that was a good tip from @BEEF SUPREME - learned this first-hand when I was trying to start up a sim from "cold dark airplane" mode and couldn't see a damned thing) and also wanted something not-too-expensive but not junk either

I had high hopes for the JetBeam - compact size, good price, variable features. However, the on/off button is unreliable. For a few minutes, I thought maybe it was defective. Then when I got it working I paid closer attention to the badly-translated manual, realized that part of it was user error. So I can now turn the thing on and off with proper technique....but it still doesn't always want to turn on or off even with proper technique. So it's likely going to be the backup. I'm too lazy and hamstrung for transportation right now to bother with returning it. It mostly works.

The Nitecore TUP was a pleasant surprise. SUPER compact, variable brightness through wide ranges, rechargeable, and RIDICULOUSLY bright (1250 lumens) on the highest setting. You can feel heat coming off the lens when it's that bright.

Probably going to get another one to have around. But, these should do for the time being.

Streamlight. Buy once, cry once. I told you this a while back. I use a flashlight everyday for everything that you do and a bunch more. I start cold airplanes in the dark, I do a much more thorough preflight than you're probably required to and I sometimes have to get elbow deep into parts of an airplane you'll never see to fix something that may or may not be broken. I also prefer Snap-On tools, if you're going to have to use and rely on something everyday to make a living the last thing you should be worried about is whether or not it's going to work. Buying quality tools is money well spent and a flashlight is just another tool. Treat yourself!

I had to re read this entire thread. Which was cool because I got caught up on the banana drama.

But I literally contributed nothing. All I said was iPhone ggaaaaannnnnggggg! Which is something but didn’t really answer any questions.

Ah, dammit. Wrong Beef.

It was @Beefy McGee .

My bad.

I tried to preflight with an iPhone one night when I forgot to grab my flashlight. It was disappoint. I used the iPhone to find the jet bridge code to get back to the cockpit to get my flashlight and then re-preflight. Perhaps I don't know how to operate an iPhone though

Just as a reminder about torches.

My neighbor has an early '80s Mercedes two seat convertible that he restored and is very proud of, it looks something like this but nicer...

Anywho he decided to try and put the top down and freeze his ass off last night after he hadn't driven it for a while and his adventure ended basically outside of my front gate. I noticed this and went out to help, he had a flashlight (it was fancy but I don't recall the brand) but it was not amenable to providing lumens so he ran back to his garage and grabbed his backup which was also acting a bit lazy. It turned out apparently he'd forgotten that he installed a fuel shut off valve to keep old gas from varnishing up his carb, I had a light in my pocket and after I tapped it on the fender we were able to quickly diagnose the issue and he went on to go buy his family some takeout food for dinner. That little flashlight?...

Buy once cry once.
