Tipping the hotel van driver

The only thing that gets me Dale, referring to what you're talking about above, is the complete irony of a few regional or other pilots making the statement in the "tipping pizza guy" thread or even in this thread, that if said pizza guy or van driver didn't make enough money, they should just quit their job. Yet when the exact same logic is turned around and used towards a regional guy for why he stays in his job, they generally get offended that it was said to them and that its not even a reasonable option.

That's the observation I find funny.
and I agree with that as well. If you can't afford to tip the delivery guy, go get your own dashgumed pizza. I do not agree with Jace in this thread, but I also know that he is in the minority from my own personal experience. I do run across that attitude once in a while, but I do try to gently nudge my crew into tipping properly when appropriate. If the only place you can get a meal is in a restaurant, and the server does his/her job, what...you ain't gonna tip cause you don't make enough?!? YGTBSM!!!

Get it to go and go eat in your room!

Now I am going to take issue with this post (and it isn't the first time):
The internet is for all of things you wish you could say to people in real life if it weren't for their ability to punch you in the face. Haven't you figured this out yet?
I agree, there are lots of place on the internet where that is the modus operandi, but that is not the philosophy here at jetcareers...if you think it is, then you don't really have a handle on what we are trying to do here.

We have had these same conversations, face to face, together...disagreed, and yet still acted with respect and honored each others freindships, or at least happy to have the aquaintence.

So if you want a place where you feel you can hide behind the keyboard and say things that would get you punched in the nose, look somewhere else.

Now, Boris, I hope you know that I enjoy your posts, and I appreciate the knowledge you share here, and maybe one day we can put the hurt on a bottle of Crown together... so please don't take this message personally, but I wanted to take this opportunity to make this distinction.

And boris, luv ya bro

You know I don't understand you pilots who think YOU should be tipped. I mean where does it stop? Look there are certain places you know tipping might come into play. Waitress/Waiter and Van Driver..etc..I hate tipping personally because the employer of said employee is getting off paying their employee less. That is why people from other countries have a hard time here like people from the UK they don't tip there. Don't get me wrong I always tip where it is expected and if the service warrents it. In the case of the van driver handle your own bags and tip him/her a buck for the ride and be done with it. I know you flight crews ride the vans a lot but a buck won't kill you.

oh I should be tipped, dude...you should see my landings...and I really don't mind when they clap for the landings when it's my leg...I deserve the accolades:laff:

Depends on how long of a drive is and what kind of "service" it is. If it's an FBO and a line guy is taking us for a ride and offers to stop for a quick bite to eat because it's late, etc...they get more than someone who complains about having to take us and tries to kill us (who probably gets nothing for being a vaginal irrigation sack).

DUDE!

I wanted to get the point across without
1) Getting yelled at (again) for typing something I shouldn't and
2) Getting yelled at (again) for using creative spellings for the word I intended to use.

To my knowledge (not that I've really read them - guilty) there's nothing in the rules that says you can't use adjectives and nouns and verbs to prevent yourself from breaking one of the rules. :D

Tools are the inventions created as a direct result of man being lazy. I'm the biggest tool I can think of.

you make me laugh Ha hA ha HA aHAAhaha Good night mini:buck:

here ya go
1. Keep your posts professional. (fail)
You never know who'll end up as your new chief pilot. Trust me, I know.
2. Do not spam the forum.
If you need traffic or want to plug your business or website, please contact advertising@jetcareers.com
3. Watch your language. (fail)
If you can't express your frustration without the use of a four-letter word, come back when you're not as frustrated.
4. Be kind to your fellow user. (eeehhhh wellll ok)
Take it outside, folks, this isn't cage fighting and 99.9% of the rest of us don't care that you two can't get along on a personal level.
5. Pay it forward.
Did someone on the site help you? Return the favor and help someone on site that needs guidance. "I got mine, pull up the rope" isn't what we're about.
6. Be proactive.
Don't like the direction or attitude in a thread? Well, state your case clearly and concisely. Leave the verbal rocket launcher at home.
7. If it isn't "PG-13", it doesn't belong on the website. (FAIL)
I uhh, really didn't need an uhh, that plastered on my work computer in the pilot lounge. Come on now!
8. Consider yourself an invited guest in my living room.
If you wouldn't act a fool in my home as an invited guest, refrain from doing it on my website. Keep you feet off the furniture, don't whizz on the toilet seat and we'll get along just fine! :)
9. Don't Post Angry! (FAAIILL)
It can really make you look like a doofus. Besides, arguing on the internet is stupid. You don't want to be stupid, right? :)</B>
10. Non-aviation threads belong in the Lavatory. (like this one)
The lavatory is there as a means to an end when you want to talk about anything that is not aviation related. Enjoy it, use it, don't abuse it.</B>
11. Our moderators are not "referees". We're here to keep Jetcareers a friendly, informative and fun environment, not to ensure "overly vigorous" debates are fought out evenly. If a thread or user has gotten out of hand, report it to the moderation team using the 'report post' feature (

). If your response to the user is in clear violation of the the rules of this website, you may receive a warning or infraction -- even though you feel "the other guy started it first". This is very important and helps maintain a healthy environment here at Jetcareers.com.
12. Most importantly, HAVE FUN. (OK you pass this one)
Jetcareers is "edu-tainment". You can have a great time, exchange ideas, actually even learn something about aviation without the stuffy "I have more hours than thou" attitude at other websites. Attend one of our many "Meet 'n Greets" and learn for yourself.
We reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason.

Few months ago I was paired with a really good crew and all of us would hang out together. We would overnight in a certain city every week. Whenever we land we usually have to call for the shuttle, but not there. The van driver was always already waiting for us. The captain would buy us all pizza and would call in the order during the van ride. The driver would drop us off and go pickup our pizza. He would also open the hot tub/pool area for us.

This would become my favorite overnight, and we made sure we took care of him.

You know, I even tip the guys when I get take-out from a restaurant. Mind you, it usually only a buck or so...but they made my food, packaged it up for me...etc. It's good to take care of the people that take care of you!

It would be good for everyone to have worked in food service (wait staff, bartender, delivery person, etc...) at least once in their lifetime. You certainly gain a new appreciation of the work involved and the fact that tips ARE how you're money is made.

(I actually do this as well, but if a guy can't afford the waiter, don't sit at the table;)

I worked in a restaurant for several years in the '80's, so I feel ya here. I have often seen folks who have not had that experiencebe more resistant to giving tips. Interestingly enough, some who have not been in the business before don't know how, or are unwilling to undertip when the service was poor. You see, I always tip something, most of the time it's 20%, but when service is not good it starts going down. That way, they know you didn't stiff them, and that the lower amount is reflective of the service they provided.

Matter of fact, I tipped 33% the other night an an event, because she was so busy and the place was so slammed, that she could barely make it to the table, and yet the service was wonderful.

So when you go out and have the occasional nice $200 dinner with someone.. why does the waitress feel she deserves $30-$40 tip for that???? She spends about 3-5 minutes total working with you at best. Takes your order, has someone else bring you a drink, asks for a refill or another drink later, asks if u need anything, brings you the tab.. they don't even bring out the food or drinks themselves in those places usually..

Why in the hell does that deserve $40 from me? That is asinine.. I could care less what my bill is, or if it's customary or the nice thing to do.. That much money is NOT deserved for what they do. Why should they get any more of a tip than the girl busting her but at Ihop running around just because the bill is more?? The logic is flawed..

..and yes I have worked in a restaurant/bar.. yeah, it sucks when it gets the busy rushes, but you aren't doing $300hr worth of work thats for damn sure. A lot of places don't even share the tips with the bussers/cooks doing all the real work either.. I know some places DO share tips, but not the ones I know people working at.

I do tip.. It just always pisses me off when the numbers start getting high like that above the $20 range because they certainly don't deserve it.. unless they get me drunk, then I don't care :insane:

here is the thing about restaurants that gets me. tips used to be 10% then 15, now they are trying to push it to 18% saying its a cost of living thing. Ok, im not a math major, but if my favorite dish at restaurant x goes from $15 to $20 (and yes most restaurants have raised their prices just like everyone else) doesn't their tip go up too? I'm sorry 18% is nuts to me! especially now days. It seems really rare to actually get good service. Take your order, bring a drink or two. someone else brings the food. usually have to wait for a drink refill.

I had a waitress a while back who really went above and beyond. I made sure to tip her well, but more importantly on the way out I asked to speak to the manager. The look on his face as he walked up was that he was expecting to hear a complaint. When I told him the server was outstanding and one of the best I have had in a long time he didn't know what to say! I told him he should recognize her for doing a job well done.

Now you get absolutely nothing for good customer service at the airlines.. so they get nothing special in return..

Don't EVER use the words airlines and customer service in the same sentence again.

I can't believe that there are pilots that actually want/expect tips. How pathetic.

The only thing that gets me Dale...is the complete irony of a few regional or other pilots making the statement ... Yet when the exact same logic is turned around and used towards a regional guy for why he stays in his job, they generally get offended that it was said to them and that its not even a reasonable option.

....and they cheer and high five over getting hired at 500TT, then complain about the low pay, stand-ups, and van drivers.

It is really sad, but unles you have at least 50,000 mile elite status and airline club membersip, airline customer service is non-existant. But I guess, unless you fly every day, you wouldn't care that much as a customer.

That said, 'southernets' did screw me on a confirmed same day standby this year... hopefully my nasty letter will resolve it. To be fair, customer service was great, company policy was braindead.

I know that was meant as a generality, but you should know there are A LOT of regional folks (vast majority, in fact) who do not fit into the regional pilot stereotype.
