time off

Are you talking vacation time? In that case I get two weeks off in 2006 as a 2nd year FO.

As for your average monthly schedule it's easy to get time off. For November (11 months w/XJT) my original line had 13 days off but we have this thing called a "Line Improvement Window." Basically you're on the computer trading trips and dropping days etc.....I improved my line to 17 days off, every weekend off and no working on Thanksgiving.

Reserve availability, whether the airline is short or not at the moment and the "Q" factor. :)

A week and a half???

Not likely unless it's something really important ie your wedding, funeral, having a baby etc...If you want the time off to hang at your buddies wedding I'd say unlikely.

That might be the "Q Factor" :) !

Like I put my vacation over my wedding. But if it didn't work, I could try to do a personal drop. If THAT didn't work, I could try and swap trips to get the day off if there were other willing pilots. If THAT didn't work, I'd have to spend some time in the chief pilot's office explaining that it's an important "life event" and that I have exhausted all available resources in order to get time off.

But if it's just ten days off to go party with friends in Cancun, fuggetabowtit!

And many thanks about the avatar! ;)

Put the request in immediately.

Have you talked to your chief pilot yet?

Talk to your Chief Pilot about it. They are pretty good about these things. Don't go through scheduling, because they won't help you in matters like this. Only the CPs really can. Are you there now? Just starting? How "new" will you be?

Man, that would be pretty lame if they wouldn't even give you a week and a half off for your own funeral.

"Hello? Crew scheduling? I'm calling in dead? I know it's a holiday weekend and you don't have reserve availability, but uhh, I'm just trying to give you a 'heads up'. Chief pilot? Huh? I'm not sure if hey have pay phones in eternity. Well, gotta walk down the well-lit hallway into the light, ciao!"

Calling in dead is a good one.

So is the guy who's phone rang in the middle of the night, he answers it, it's scheduling. He listens to them, then says "hey, honey, it's scheduling, they're looking for your husband, what should I tell them?"

Its my wedding/honeymoon. They will have 6 months notice regarding the dates off also.

like others said, coordinate with the chief pilot and crew planning (not scheduling).

How does flying in the reserves work? I heard that you can just take time off and they can't argue with you is this true?
