"Those who can't, period"

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

[ QUOTE ]
Kathie arrived for our interview with the absolute minimum flight hours required for a CFI certificate to instruct in a single-engine airplane (15), because the policy of the flight school she attended was to complete ratings in a multiengine airplane first, thereby allowing Kathie to “perform the duties as pilot in command.” The single engine land rating was an add-on.
Regulations permitted nearly all her flights to have either an instructor or an examiner as the “student” in the other seat. While solo hours had been cut short (only 20), she did have 50 precious hours in a regional jet simulator.

[/ QUOTE ]

Does that mean she had 5 solo hours in a multi?

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

Yup Larry Tiffin is down at Nogales, I did my Multi Comm/IFR add on with him, great guy and nice airport and burger

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

Larry Tiffin runs the FBO down in Nogales. We take a C172 down there sometimes for some XC timebuilding stuff. I like going down there except for the left traffic for 21 puts you right into the side of a mountain.

Yeah, I used to run into him down there back in my cargo days.

It's like Doug has said over and over and over: (and forgive me if I slaughter it, Doug): "Lots of people want to be a pilot. Not many want to become a pilot."

Just MHO.

[/ QUOTE ]

You FNG CFIs think you're pilots?

Don't make me come down there, Mike!

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

They're not pilots until they perform the "Mike Polay Weather Recon" up to Cessna North during level 4 thunderstorms, eh MikeD?

I'm not sure if it was Larry Tiffin. Didn't Larry Tiffin start some PFT thing with Chieftains?

The guy that performed my retest was kind of short, slightly heavyset and wore a Hawaiian shirt. Very mellow, very relaxing and had a distaste for the guy who busted me.

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

First off, I'm NOT defending the new CFI in this article, she was clearly unprepared for the interview!!!

But...Arlynn is a difficult person to work for, even she will tell you that. I once interviewed with her, and was OFFERED a job as a CFI with Aerotech. At the time I had over 1000 hours dual given with a 95% pass rate, Gold Seal, ATP written passed, 200+ hours of tailwheel dual given, no accidents/incidents/violations, all ASF programs complete, and I was an Aviation Safety Counselor with FSDO-11. Arlynn said she really appreciated my experience and made a big deal of offering me a whopping $14 per hour flying around C-172's most of time. (Top pay in the business according to her). She also made it clear that after I paid for my "standardization flights", and my multi-engine ATP, WITH Aerotech, she would consider giving me a small raise.

Needless to say, I politely declined the position.

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

Perhaps I'm reading this wrong, but simply because a flight school may or may not sponsor jetcareers doesn't mean that you're not able to speak freely about perspectives.

Any advertiser, if it's one of them that you're referring to with your comment, knows off the bat that it's a free-flow/open-exchange website, regardless of their sponsorship of the website.

Unless, of course, you guys would rather I do away with all advertising and start charging for access. Their dime or your dime, your choice!

FoShizzle, you oughta know better, yo!

THAT's the same guy that gave me my CFII check. Old, slightly heavierset dude with a good attitude and a blue Hawaiian shirt. I remember him. Easiest checkride I had.

No one hs done it until they've WX reconned for Polay.

Now that you mention it, Tiffin did have some right seat "build time" riding program for his Chieftains at AZ Pathetic airlines that he was running.

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

That blue shirted guy is probably the one that did my ME-IR ride!

Remember, Lefevre ("La Fever!" "Hey that's 'la-fay' punk!") got out of the business, got married to some Chicagoland hottie and her wealthy father bought them a house and got him some high profile job.

Hey, if you had Trump-type cash, would you want your beautiful daughter marrying a broke CFI?

j/k!

The name of the school isn't being witheld because it's a JC advertiser ... in the article the academy is mentioned as "Kathie had graduated 12 months earlier from Big Name Flight School with minimum hours ..."

We're not saying the name because we only know it as "Big Name Flight School" from the article, although I'm sure we're all figuring out which schools it may or may not be.

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

Yeah, just repeating the article's praseology (sp?) and was just wondering how many places operated this way. I also did not say a name because I was only speculating as to how that school works based on what others have said and we all know how rumors spread in this industry so I figured best to not name my thought. Don't worry, I was not holding back for ad reasons.

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

Arlynn told me she would not consider any CFI from an accelerated training program.

[/ QUOTE ]

What is considered accelerated?

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

Definately, but what about 8months to a year. That seems to be the rate at which most academies pump out CFII's? Where do you draw the line?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, because the military has definitely proven that you can't make quality pilots in an accelerated training program!

Like Doug said, your education is what you make of it and get out of it. It's up to you and your CFI to cover and learn the material, doesn't matter if you do it in 90 days or 90 months.

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

I got my MEI in about three days, including checkride up in Vacaville, CA. I guess I'd be hosed!

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

She never named names, but it was pretty clear she prefers University type programs. The interesting thing is that Aerotech offers a zero time to CFI program, not sure how long it is though.

One of her complaints has proven to be very true here at Georgia Aviation and Technical College. Almost all of the new CFIs graduating from here have 0 IMC time, and typically have only been to very small towered fields two or three times. By small, I mean 70 ops a day, barely in need of a tower at all (KMCN). It's pretty pathetic to have a new instructor that is actually afraid to go into busy airspace, or up into the clouds, because of inexperience. The school is doing them a great dis-service IMO.

Re: \"Those who can\'t, period\"

I personally don’t think that it is so much a question of how long it takes. I do think a quickie CFI (i.e. all three in two weeks) means there is no way in hec one second is spent on actually learning how to teach flying. It seems to me the gripe in the article (one I strongly agree with) is that some of these CFI programs do nothing to train you to be effective at teaching and passing on knowledge effectively.
