Best job I ever had in Grand Forks was bartending. Quit instructing at UND because of it, too. They wanted my flying to be the priority. I asked if they could pay me $150 a day? They declined and I said, see ya. I'll fly part 61 and get real experience, thank you very much. Oh yeah, here's your red tape back, sorry I forgot I kept this. . . .:laff:

Amen to that. Most part 61 places have few to no so called "saftey policy and procedures" and part 141 flying clubs/schools have about a page or two worth of policies and even then it covers minimum pilot time to fly certain planes, maybe some off limit airports but thats it.

A friend told me one day the UND bubble is like moving back in with your parents only its not parents telling you what to do but UND. Interesting, I move out of home only to go back to the same environment of being restricted. Telling me I can't fly past a certain hour or in certain type of weather. Oh you can't go to devils lake today cause its -1 mommy & daddy (und) doesnt want you to get hurt! Oh and one last comment, make sure you wear your sporty winter boots in april on your night flight and its only -5 outside eventhough there is no snow on the ground.........

Ya they need all the red tape they can get, their supplies are running low. I think I will just get my PPL here

Yup. I'm surprised they don't make you wear a wet suit if you fly over water. What amazes me is that they make you bring boots, but they removed the good emergency kits from the airplanes and put in bare-basics POS ones. I would pay $1 more an hour to get those things back.

It's like mommy and daddy but the reasons behind the rules are completely different. Parents actually care for their kids (hopefully); UND is just concerned with money and insurance. They could care less if you do a SE stall in SEMI or kill the engine 10' off the ground, as long as they don't have to pay. They would completely put the pilots under the bus no matter what, so they don't even have to care about their image.

lol winter boots.

i BRIEFLY entertained the idea of carrying boots with me to flights... mind you, these were some steel toe, muddy as hell, construction boots... and i got tired of carrying those around pretty quick.

i never once carried "winter boots"

i got hassled a few times for it and told them where they could put that boot. look, im already wearing multiple pairs of socks and warm shoes...im not going to change into some cold boots after i crash a plane so i can walk around in the snow. staying at the crash site is your best chance of being found anyway unless you can for SURE make it to a house/shelter/building etc etc... winter boots are going to be the least of my concerns if i put a plane into a field.

what did they downsize the survival kit to? pack of instant heat ramen noodles?

Or you could buy a small pair of winter boots and *gasp* wear them on the plane. I guarantee you two layers of socks and a dece pair of wally world winter boots will keep your feet unfrozen in temps far colder than your average hiking/tennis shoe. The point being, I agree with you, i'm sticking as close to the crash site as possible, but I'm doing so with warm toes.

my point being, as an adult, i should be *at least* allowed to make my own decisions about clothing, and deal with the consequences of those decisions.

Agreed. But what about the guy who wears shorts and a t-shirt when it -30? I wonder if he will ever learn.

he'll learn when he has to go to the hospital for frostbite.

and if he doesn't, well, is it UND's job to babysit? no, it's not.

you know that whole thing you learn as a kid about touching a hot stove? this is the same, just the cold-version.

Hopefully you never got to fly for an airline. If you do, you will quickly learn that there are MANY, MANY more jobs that pay better. You will also see that UND has red thread compared to airline ops.

Nope, you are like a child, in fact worse then a child. Because you are at UND you have no ability to think for yourself and develop real world flying skills; that is for after UND! ZOMG!

It wasn't any better at WMU. The Flight Operations Manual (FOM) said you had to have a hat, gloves, and coat at all times from October - April. Even if it was 80 degrees outside. Ridiculous. I think all Part 141 puppymills are like this.

Funny you say that because I had a good discussion with one of the most experienced people here at this school about how we are training airline pilots and were not teaching people how to fly anymore. Management and standards Dept. don't realize that the there are many other flying jobs available that don't utilize a checklist to the line. UND is not very receptive to outside ideas if it not from an airline. A few of the people im supposed to graduate with are completely fed up with UND and in have completely lost interest in flying. Shame...

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have used multiple flight instructors so far and they for the most part seem too caught up on me doing the checklist and not enough on actually getting used to the damned plane when close to the airport. Just something I have observed, I may be wrong in my assumption. It just seems to me to be an unneeded stress especially when I am not confident in everything I am doing yet.

well, if the company you decide to work for says to do it "this way" but you want to do it "that way" how well do you think that will go over?

i understand what you are saying but over 1/2 the students at UND will be going straight to an airline, so the training is tailored to them. did you ever notice the top of everything says "spectrum airline pilot training" it has been that way for 20yrs

Learn the flow dude.. Sorry your checklist is 20 pages long though.

Yeah I know. Flow, flow, flow. . . . lol Its just sucky that I have to focus on that as opposed then whats going on outside which might help me more as a young pilot.

Guess I just need to perfect the flow though so I do not spend as much time on it.

Oh well who gives a damn, I am going to transfer closer to home and doing my training at an FBO after this semester probably anyways :rawk:

Freedom is flashing across your eyes and its in your dreams every night I bet haha. :D

Yes instructors push checklists because they have to, but find one of the few unique instructors and they can make it enjoyable. There are two kinds of instructors here. Either they did all of their training here especially private with limited or no outside experience in other states or they earned their private elsewhere and have numerous experience in the real world. Those that flown eleswhere are loaded with experience and are usually a better fit just because of that outside knowledge.

I'm waiting for the day UND will require us to flile VFR flight plans to the practice area. As stupid as it seems I see it as a real threat.

P.S UND is silently developing "anti authority" in students...the more they add/change the more they resist it, just ask classmates, interesting
