...late at night
Well, I think I've heard it all. On the way into to Opa Locka tonight around 11:15 pm, I'm talking to Miami approach but monitoring the OPF CTAF on the #2 comm. I hear a foreign (Chinese?) dialect making calls in reference to departing runway 12. I couldn't gather whether he was taxiing to the runway, on the runway, or just departed the runway. All the calls sounded the same, and all three ended with "ANY TRAFFIC PLEASE ADVISE". I was still 15 miles out, so I saw no need to reply to his "ANY TRAFFIC PLEASE ADVISE". After Miami dropped me off to UNICOM, I made a report on a 10 mile straight in to runway 12. No sooner did I unkey the mike, the other pilot transmitted that he was turning crosswind and for "ANY TRAFFIC PLEASE ADVISE". I couldn't help it but to shoot back with "I just did". A couple seconds later, another voice, obviously the instructor, keyed up and said "thank you" in a very sarcastic manner. Am I wrong in assuming that the phrase "ANY TRAFFIC PLEASE ADVISE" was nothing more than from rote memorization and the student really had no clue what he was saying.
THEN...on the way back north, the departure controller changed as I was crossing over Allegator Alley. It went from an obvious veteran to a guy that sounded like he feared for his life. I took it to be a trainee maybe working his first live traffic. About 10 north of the Alley, he told me to standby for a handoff to Miami Center. Three minutes later, I hadn't heard back from him, so I asked him if he wanted me to call center. The reply: "Flight Express 803, uh, yeah, contact Miami Center on one three two point foouuuuu..whats the frequency up there?". I thought maybe he was asking his instructor for some help, but 15 seconds later, nothing. I replied with "You mean one three two point four five for Flight Express 803" and he shot back with "Yeah, thats it, have a good night."
And this is only week three on the line. Can't wait to see what else happens in the future.
Thank goodness I do this every night.
