Things to do on long layovers.

If you don’t have a degree yet spend your long boring layovers doing homework.

For a while I took my laptop and played video games. Now I read books and drink beer and about once a month or less I wear my workout clothes that never seem to leave my bag.

I’ve found putting on my workout stuff increases the chances of me finding the motivation to actually go work out. Especially if they haven’t been washed in a few days because that automatically means I’m going to need a shower anyway.

Haven’t laid over for work in 18 months, and I’m trying real hard to keep it that way thankfully. Being in my own bed every night with my family is invaluable.

When I did - get out of the hotel. See the local stuff. Ask locals what the local stuff is, not something you found on the Google. Hiked, fished, explored (and got lost), partied with locals, you name it. If I was in my room I better be showering or sleeping or I’m not doing this right.

Obviously don’t do anything illegal, don’t get arrested, don’t go frolicking through the woods naked with a FA like that regional guy, etc.

I'm a Roller Coaster Nut, So I seek out Amusement/Theme Parks to visit on layovers.

Going to see a Movie is good way to kill a few hours as well.

Long layovers are becoming rare for my airline, but on the occasional 14-15 hour layover I just sleep more than normal. Then I wake up and tell myself...”Maybe next time I’ll work out or go for a walk”.

Public transit and venture out of the hotel. I’m not Anthony Bourdain, but there is always good food and entertainment.

You could also stay in the hotel and binge watch Netflix or Law and Order.

Or write a book?

A lot of guys like to go to the Blue Marlin on SJO overnights. Never been, I guess it’s a nice seafood place.

Run, find good food to eat, find fun and interesting stuff to do, and sleep. I've gone cliff jumping into water, snow mobiling, caught major league baseball games. I'm not a beach person at all. I live near a beach and never go...until I'm at work. I've been zip lining, gone to the zoo, and explored this really neat large outdoor art gallery. Did I mention running. I run a lot. It's the best way to see an area. I'm about 20 miles from a 1000 miles so far this year. I've been ocean kayaking.

Short one: work out if time permits, eat and sleep.
Long one: go out with the CA and FA if I'm with a good crew, work out and sleep a little more.

Mine range anywhere from 10 hours to 37 or so (nothing like a lost day in CAK to make you question the meaning of life....a good crew can make or break those for sure).

I find I'm a slam clicker about 50% of the time and down to grab a meal or a few beverages the other 50%. Just depends who I'm with.

I take it F&H is gone? (Disregard, it is closed. That's a shame)

Get out and explore, having the photography bug doesn't hurt in wanting to check things out. Love finding local coffee/beer and all around good food too. Some of my favorite 24+ hour layovers over the years have been grabbing a car to see nearby national parks or regional attractions. I've also caught up with family/friends and ridden local trails too (mountain bike). Just gotta get creative sometimes.
