Things to do on long layovers.

I flew just a little 135 and sometimes would get stuck in places without wifi for several hours. There are countless strategy games which can make time fly by and before I knew it my passengers were bugging me that they were ready to go. Stellaris, Europa Universalis and Civilization are great time wasters. I'd imagine the Nintendo Switch might help you kill time and be pretty portable. If you're in a hotel or anywhere you might have a TV your laptop can be a pretty good console with an hdmi cable and a wireless controller.

Public transit and venture out of the hotel. I’m not Anthony Bourdain, but there is always good food and entertainment.

You could also stay in the hotel and binge watch Netflix or Law and Order.

Depends. Sometimes I catch up on sleep. Most of the time I’ll go out with the FO and/or FAs if they are with us.

I once was at the HKG for like 17hrs. Also I couldn't get a transit visa so I couldn't roam around the city  I basically caught up with my sleep first, tried different local food that I could get at the airport(not the expensive stuff tho xD). Had a chat with a mom who was travelling with her kid. Roamed a lot at the airport. Also I spent a couple of hours just looking at the planes taking off and landing (yea I love doing this, idky).

A transit visa? In HKG? Are you from the US?

Daydream that I wish I worked a high paying 9-5 M-F and was at home instead. That goes away when I get back into the cockpit and work. Then go home and have nothing to do for 4-6 days at a time. It’s a vicious cycle that consists of drinking and stacking Benjamin’s.

Joking aside, I’m a beer snob and constantly trying to find new local microbreweries along the road. Getting close to the 1,000 unique mark on untappd!

Ya can't swing a dead cat without hitting a microbrewery in Maryland. Get a few layovers and a rental car. You'll see what I mean.

Send me a request on untapped! When in NY I can point you in the right direction username NovemberVictor

Tons of walking, usually with some food or alcohol mixed in. When I’m in a more walkable city it’s not uncommon for me to walk 10-14 in a day. Just pick a new direction each time and go. Great way to discover new places.

Same can be done using public transportation. Found one of my favorite restaurants in HKG by taking the MTR to the end of the line and then using the inter webs to find food.

Exploring any way you can is a great way to spend a long layover. I have found some spectacular food, people and sights by simply meandering. Combine Yelp and Google, then remember you have nothing but time....
