Least anyone forget that banks can no longer lend to ANY flight schools other than universities. With the training so expensive, and the pay so low, it's too much of a risk. This is a wall we have yet to encounter in the industry. Hence my legitimate concern. Sure there is a surplus now, but what will happen as the economy recovers and new pilots are needed?
What should that be telling you?
THE BANKS think it is a
BAD bet. Don't think for one second that the banks don't have people on the payroll with degrees I haven't even heard of studying and analyzing all the data about this profession, as well as the future demand for pilots. I would be willing to say they have much better access to information than you or I do.
What reasons perhaps would they think financing training for this profession to be too great a risk?
A. The pilot does not even complete training
B. The pilot does not even get a job
C. The pilot gets a job, but the pay is less than he could make at Home Depot
D. The pilot gets a job, but then gets furloughed
Many of the loans that have been issued previously were completely unsecured, meaning that if the loan defaults, the bank does not get paid. They can try through the legal process to recover something, but if there is nothing to take from the pilot, what good does that do them? They get a garnishment on his wages for a fraction of what they paid out most likely; and getting that takes a long court process and the cost of having lawyers do their dirty work.
You really expect people to go to college, work, and pursue their ratings?? Hats off to you for accomplishing this feat and having the funds to do it, but let's get real.
You say that like its hard, almost impossible.
Since I started flight training and working as a pilot I have completed one Bachelors degree, almost completed a second Bachelors Degree, had two kids, worked at minimum two jobs, and still get some free time on a regular basis. Once I finish this second Bachelors I will be starting a Masters Degree. I have kept my debt to a minimum, I have more debt for my degrees than I do for flight training, and its only as high as it is because I changed majors a few times.
My point is that while it is certainly a challenge, it really is not that hard. Particularly considering the job you are training for won't be any easier than going to college and training at the same time.
