The REAL value to jumping to a regional?

Don't short yourself by not having an application in with all the majors especially with your C-5 time.. I read something the other day that a Delta pilot at indoc was told that they would be hiring 8,000 over the next 15 years. Add that to what the other majors will need and after they take the cream off the top, there will be something for everyone for years to come..
Wow so you only have to wait 15 years for a shot

Great!!

Looking at AMF's payscale I don't see how someone can make even $60k there as a fairly low longevity guy.

The new pay scale isn't on APC yet. 60kish, 3rd year Brasilia. Holiday, and the occasional TDY and per diem isn't included, so it should be around that with a good tax guy.

The most I ever made at AMF was 65k. My last full year their I made 63 with no per diem and only working mostly 3 day work weeks.

I've never flown 121, so I only have 1 leg to stand on in this discussion. Most 135 cargo guys deal with similar things that 121 guys deal with.

121 guys have gate agents and 135 guys have ramp supervisors. From what I understand that both can be similarly pushy when it comes to blocking out on time.

121 guys deal with ramp control and 135 guys deal with ramp control (out of any of the major hubs. Start up and taxi with calling ramp up and see what happens. ;) ). I've even called ramp/ground for push back many many many times!

Flight attendants? You 121 guys are on your own with this one!

Both have to get a release before blocking out. A big difference is 121 guys get a packet with everything they need to look at while 135 guys have to get their own weather, notams, w&b, and etc....

Both are payed to get from point a to point b in a safe and efficient manner.

My friends that have left freight for 121 say that 121 is far easier in most aspects and that the assimilation was pretty easy.

You could do i, but seeing how a couple of majors did a person who I consider a friend and a noted member of the site here, they continued to thumb their nose at his application unless he got some 121 time. It's messed up, but for now it is what it is. Select your goal, figure out how to get there. It might not always be comfortable or even make sense to a non-aviator, but it is what it is.
I'm glad I got my 1,000 121 before I was looking for real jobs. Jeeeeeeezusssss!

Good god, let the airlines tell you "no". I work for an airline that would do a backflip for a C5 guy with 1000TT.
my app has been in since the day i found out my early separation was approved. :) I'm happily waiting for them to tell me yes though.....1 internal (working on more), masters, boxes checked, just gotta wait my turn....and of course network at NJC ;)

I just figured it was better to get started somewhere and get some 121 experience while i wait rather than sit around and do nothing.

Update it often. Double check all pages.....

Good Luck!!

In my mind, you were doing that while overnighting in Bahamian resorts. Meanwhile, I was overnighting in the LGA Holiday Inn, the one where the crew room was formerly a morgue. A tip of my hat to you, sir.

It's my regional buddies that are advocating that I should stay the most. They're seeing something I'm not apparently. I'll do what I want of course. :) I actually want the schedule of the regionals. That FO pay though... UGH!

Your buddies sounds like idiots.

Just wanted to add something for the regional/military crowd who want to go to a LCC as a stepping stone to a legacy. That's your prerogative, but be smart about it.

I flew with one if our CAs who attends our company job fairs. He makes them feel relaxed and talks like he's your best friend - he is a nice guy but also this Co. has a huge emphasis on people-people skills. You'd be surprised how many candidates get totally relaxed at a job fair once they figure they are talking to a best friend-type guy. Then these candidates really open up, and the kiss of death eventually comes out: "you know, I really like (LCC company name) but eventually I really want to work for Delta/AA/United. This CA will still talk to you and answer questions, be nice the whole way, but once you leave, guess which pile your resume is going in.

Be smart. Sometimes, true open honesty will get you. If you really want to work here, then fine and have your reasons (you very well may be asked). But if you are looking at this Co. as a stepping stone, don't go telling it to them. You will not be hired.

Also don't (witnessed before) at a job fair or networking event, be bagging endlessly on how Airline/Regional X is a garbage operation, would never want to work there, has crap contracts, a lousy pilot group (pick your poison of complaints); then when encountering someone who works for same X airline, proceeding to chat that person up and ask for a recommendation for hiring.....

Technique only.
