The light turned on!

I would still tell the FA to give you a Soda. Its a fricken soda

My point exactly. You can be fired over a friggin soda. Made me view MY situation and realize there's no organization to back me up. I raise hell with management over something and the next time I run over a nail i could be fired for "damage to company property" (over dramatic exaggeration, I know).

The post really never was about me not getting a free soda cause I'm cheap as hell.

So there I was talking to an FA. I asked her, " How come every airline, when I walk into the cabin (before pax board mind you) offers me (a lowly fueler) a soda, except your airline?" Now I'm not materialistic and respectfully decline said soda 90% of the time. That doesn't change the fact that the offer was still there. And when the offer is there it makes me, at least, feel like the flight crew does not view themselves as above anyone else. She went on to say, "Because we can be fired if we're caught." Fired?! Over a soda?! A 60 cent piece of aluminum...and you can be fired? Conversation went on and continued into willingly "working for less than you're worth." Now I don't make much as a fueler. A whopping $10.25 an hour. I then went on to say, in not so many words, that I cannot change how much I'm paid. That does not stop me from "talking bad" about my employer though, unlike her. Does not have anything bad to say about the airline (non union FA btw ;) )There's no one to fight for me. I'm non union. Other employees might agree for higher wages but wouldn't fight management because management would find "reasonable cause for termination."

Like I said, the light turned on! Unions can be useful.

/End rant

How about buying your own $.60 soda rather than expecting a handout?

Wild idea, I know.

Jesus H. Christ, who the heck says "soda." It's "pop," P-O-P, pop! :D

It's Cola. :)

Unless it's a lemon-lime or root beer product.

You're both wrong, it's COKE! (no matter the variety) Always has been, always will be...atleast to us Southerner's ;)

Personally I feel that you can attempt to justify not handing out a can of coke, or any drink for that matter, to a ramper/fueler/whoever based upon the "cost".

What you can't take into account is the fact that you might be helping yourself out. We all know how hot that it gets out on the ramp during the summer...lets say you offer something to drink to a ramper that helps prevent them from passing out on the ramp. You've just saved a delay among other things...and we all know delays cost the airlines money.

Those are variable cost, but they're still cost none the less.

I'll take care of someone who's out on the front line like myself before I take care of a company CEO who takes his bonus while I'm on furlough and told that if I want my job back that my union should negotiate a more "cost effective pay structure".

Like I've said before, Delta needs to get rid of Coke products........

RC!

I do enjoy RC products from time to time...there was a Greek place in Portland that had RC Cola instead of Coke or Pepsi, I was beyond surprised.

As Doug has told you though, you'll never see Delta drop Coke...period. You'd see Jtrain/Acadia admit that "Global Warming/Climate Change/New Fancy Word" is a massive plot at redistribution of wealth before Delta will drop Coke. ;)

I've been on a kick here lately where I've wanted Cheerwine...that stuff rocks my world.

At IAD we can no longer take beverages off the Airplanes for ourselves. It has now become a fireable offence (AWAC provides the food for all of UAX I believe, they get in trouble so they constantly do inventorry checks on food and beverages i am not kidding.)

Man, this is starting to sound like Reality Bites. You remember there was one character who got fired for eating a Snickers bar that he didn't pay for.

I can't say whether or not someone would actually get fired for giving someone a free soda, but they may have said that to get you to leave them alone. You ended the conversation, right?:D

Too many numbers.

So what if when I get on the plane to talk to the pilots about their fuel and get a coke then? Is it still stealing? Pilots get a coke if they ask or get up and get one. I'm not taking it off the plane, I'll just down it in the galley or where ever. :)

Besides that, at the express carrier where this happened, I know for a FACT they throw out any open cans when they land, even if half a glass was poured. Also a waste of money ;)

I think it might be an issue with sanitation more than anything. Regulations maybe?

Working in an industry with thin - even aluminum can wall thickness thin - margins is going to be unpleasant at times, union or no union.

90% of the time on the CRJ-700s, the First class F/A will offer me water or orange juice when I give them their paperwork. I always decline. The one time it was really hot out and I was insanely thirsty and asked for a cup of water, the F/A gave me the 3rd degree about stealing from the company.

Go figure.

Damn you Chase! ;) I KNOW you and I are talking about the same airline!

And for the love of all things holy here....my OP was about HOW UNIONS CAN BE GOOD. Not whether I get a friggin soda. The exchange made me realize MY situation at MY company and how EASY it would be FOR ME to get FIRED because there's no organization backing me.

If it makes my point any better then my first post of the thread: The airline she works at is losing (or lost) their health insurance. Like I said, unions are good.

Tony: No I didn't end the convo. I started an argument, much like this thread, as the woman involved is my girlfriend and I was shooting for the almighty make-up sex (I shot my opportunity away earlier that day). Needless to say my pathetic attempt ended in an EPIC FAIL.

P.s. Kinda sad when your GF doesn't give you a coke/soda/cola/pop but other FAs do. She thinks its cause I'm hitting on them. Women...;)

Cheerwine is the best!

I always love it when the rampers come on and say "Lemme get a soda!"

Firing someone for taking something off the airplane would set a precedent and prevent it from happening in the future. I think there was a memo sent out to our FA's saying don't give drinks away, all it would take is one person being fired for the rumors to spread like wildfire and keep them from handing out drinks. The company doesn't really want to have to fire someone for something so petty, training costs alone would far exceed the price of a can of soda. Essentially that person may have gotten fired for the 60 cent can of soda, but in theory that could save thousands down the road.

Palm, meet forehead.

Not to mention the more employees feel appreciated usually the harder they work. Sort of like the last job where they told us the closet full of literally thousands of tiny water bottles was off limits yet the water fountain didn't work. This was in the middle of July. They got the fountain working but nevertheless, even 1 day in that kind of heat on the ramp with no water for the employees in unacceptable in my eyes.
I guess I can sort of see the cost saving thing, but seriously, freaking out over 1 ramper getting a can of soda on a hot day that the pax just get for free anyway? Sad.
