Omar,

Congrats on the job. What kind of flight time did you have when hired? Did you have somebody walk in your resume?

macaroni!

Omar--congrats buddy. I followed you all the way through ground school (well... on this website)... that's awesome, and I am happy for you!

What was it like going from a Cessna, being a CFI, to being in the reight seat of a regional jet? Your first landing is about what I'd imagine mine to be like! I can't imagine your first flight as a regional airline pilot into LAX! Amazing huh?

Well, best of luck to you!

Chris

Glad to hear it! I'm glad you made it on-line, you can't go wrond at SKW! All the best to you!

maybe you can expand a little more on that first day experience and post it in the perspectives section. I read that and it really motivated me to power throuhg this cfi stuff and get that multi. sounds like the life i want to live.....

Omar
Just reading your post on your first day gives me the jitters, that is awesome, I can't wait till my first day.
What are the junior pilot bases at SW?

Omar, sounds great. How long does it take you to drive from where you live to PSP? When I moved from there, the traffic was terrible heading out of there on the 10 Fwy.

Omar is now officially my hero.

I'm working on doing the same thing he did (ramp to pilot at the same airline), just at a different company.

The bases for the brasilia are:
EMB

Salt Lake City, Utah
Denver, Colorado
Portland, Oregon
Houston, Texas
Fresno, California
Palm Springs, California
San Diego, California
Monterey, California
San Luis Obispo, California
Sacramento, California
Santa Barbara , California

The CRJ:
Denver, Colorado
Colorado Springs, Colorado
Fresno, California
Palm Springs, California
Sacramento, California
Salt Lake City, Utah
Santa Barbara, California
Tucson, Arizona
Chicago, Illinois

However, you will pretty much get the base you want within 2-3 months. The jr bases are IAH, PSP, SBP, and LAX(reserve base).

Not sure about the jet, but I think DEN and ORD.

SR EMB 120 bases are SAN and SLC. However like I said, things change quick.

It's pretty cool because quite a few pilots live in orange county so we all try and commute to Palm Springs. And its actually not that bad because most of our schedule start times rarely conflict with traffic. Your either reporting at 4:45am or 11am. And getting off at 1pm or 11:30pm. So you don't really hit traffic.

I leave for my second IOE trip tommorrow and the captain called me up so that we could commute to PSP.

By the way, I did my one stupid thing on IOE heheheh.

On my last day last week from RDM to SFO we show up to the airport at 7am and find out theres flow into SFO and are delayed till 840am. So the captain wants to go back to the hotel and eat the free breakfast and by the time the van got there it wasn't worth going. So I offered to stay and get things ready for departure. BIG MISTAKE. I ended up doing my flow but forgeting to start up the APU thus nearly killing the battery while trying to run too many things. The APU is a generator that allows you to do numerous things, one of them is supply energy for your electronics so you don't kill the battery. Stupid me forgets to turn it on. Well fortunetly I figure this out after 5 minutes and quickly turn everything off. I check the voltage with my fingers crossed and it shows about 24 Volts. Phewww! We only need 22 to start the APU. The captain shows up and the APU won't start. So in the end we had to get a new battery from and bring in our mechanic from portland on the next flight and got delayed another 2 hours. Yikes!

On our way to SFO its my leg flying and we end up getting holding instructions 50 miles north of the airport. We quickly look at how much holding fuel we have and see that dispatch gave us none! Yah! So I enter the hold at 18,000 feet and below me at 17,000 is a Quantas B747-400 holding on the same radial maybe a mile ahead and below him is another 747 holding on a radial 90 degrees opposite us. CRAZY! So just as we're about to head to our alternate we get a clearance for vectors to final. We end up coming down south enough where we can do somewhat of a visual and I end up doing a simultaneous approach with a ATA B757 2400ft off my right shoulder. HAAA!!! I looked over at the 757 and could see the captains freakin face! That close! I ended up landing just fine but I had my pants in a bind there for a second!

You know, I always wondered why they left out the U in Qantas... I figured it was one of those southern-hemisphere things- like the toilet flushing the wrong direction!

Used to do 11 leg, 7:45 block, 15:50 duty time days in the 1900. I think some of our crews still do.

Congrats Omar. In just a few short years you'll be bitter like the rest of us, so enjoy it while you can!

Seriously, though, keep all the politics and other BS at arm's length and you'll love this horrid career until the day you retire. Still can't beat the view out the window.

What does it take to drive it, about 2 hours? I assume you run up the 605 to the 10 or what?

Just when does that happen I wonder. I think it hit me after 6 months at my previous regional and it probably took about two years at my current employer and d00d I was there. Under both circumstances, I kind of just woke up, looked around the room and thought, "I'd rather be home today" and it never changed!
