The Future of JC

Time building is the biggest obstacle at the moment. It’s literally harder to get from a fresh commercial to 1500 than it is to get a major airline job.

Buying an airplane was pretty easy. Almost all of my time in it is dual given though. The sales and marketing side of being a CFI isn't really covered in most training. It is pretty important though - you don't do much teaching without having students.

If Doug has had enough of trying to corral the herds of cats this forum has turned into and would rather spend his free time pursuing something else I think it's awesome. This is how modern generational wealth is built. He can sell it for a tidy sum to someone with a deep wallet and no perspective simply based on the name. I like this site, I like the fact people disagree with me. If he shuts it down I'll remember it fondly.

I really don’t think you read what I wrote very carefully.

Nope. He totally missed it. As normal.

Ameriflight is still out there surviving as a time building gig. The only difference is that now there are opportunities to go from AMF straight to UPS. This is how far removed we are though. AMF had a deadly plane crash a few months back and I do not believe it was even a post about it here.
So, on 11/03 I was flying back to PHX from BNA on WN. I saw a guy wearing an Ameriflight lanyard. We talked briefly as I was in the aisle walking back to find a seat.

Me: Hey are you guys hiring pilots? I'm a pilot. (i tell him my hours)

Him: Depends.

Me: On what?

Him: If you want to die, or not. Seriously, this place is bad. I wouldn't come here, there are better places that you should go. The planes are old and we just had a crash. We've been having a lot over the past few years. Single pilot in a 99, is not for weak at heart."

That was pretty much the entire conversation as I had to keep it moving. Not really a shining endorsement, from someone on the inside.

I still remember when they flew Piper Lance planes; same ones I was flying at my cargo company out of Stellar airport. Single pilot, single engine recip, night IFR work. Was fun to fly and a good lead-in to the Chief.

I'm fairly certain I read exactly what you wrote. Shut it down if it isn't giving you joy. You own this space, my opinion is neither here nor there. I am normally a bit recalcitrant but you can blame shutting the whole thing down on someone like me, it is what it is. Sell it and watch what happens.

Here, let me do the conversation a favor by dismissing you from it, just a sec. An adult conversation doesn’t include having to re-explain oneself.

I still believe being a CFI is the best route. I've been preaching that to Max for years now. LOL
Preach! So few jobs, for so many people @ 250 looking to build time to 1500. It's super competitive. Super! It's affecting everything survey, pipeline, CFI, et. al. It's super frustrating. AeroGuard wanted to me to do a Cut-e/Wonderlick test, amongst a plethora of other ridiculous admission require, just to be accepted as a student. I'd be willing to write something about my experiences as a low timer, struggling to get an intro aviation job. But also a day in the life as a CFI in the future.

Reply bans are a hugely useful, but oft forgotten-about feature of the forum software.

Spending a ton of time at the airport, and making sure everyone there knows you. I know someone who just switched careers, spends most of his time in the MX shop, but has managed to get a few hundred hours by just being there and available. And will end up with an A&P as well pretty soon. It's the opposite of glamorous, but he did help me get an oil filter loose a few hours ago.

I find it a bit ironic that there is no advertising income anymore like there was back in the day. The site doesn't cater to the newbs like it used to. The flight schools are still there. The JC content doesn't appeal to them so they all quit. ATP is still out there but there is nothing here to attract the wannabe kids. I'll admit I'm seeing the issue from a 90's perspective. What's Reddit? At least I know what facebook is...haha.

Just asking a question, I just want to state that, so I'm not accused of being argumentative, making excuses, etc. Or not taking sage advice. I hear you. I absorbed what you said. But I got questions.

So, yeah that sounds cool. But how exactly does one do that, exactly? Honest question. My only issue with that is, again, how people do that? Just hangin' out around the airport all day three to five days a week. When they got food, rent/mortgage, car payments, electric bills, et al. Again not slamming the idea, but just wondering.

A while back someone told me that one of the FBO's was hiring a fueler. I was interested and I went to look at the job on Indeed, the pay was $12 an hour. I can't survive off of that in this economy.

I hadn't been around for so many years, so I feel a bit weird making suggestions for how to go forward with your website. It's like walking into your house and suggesting a bathroom model after I haven't seen you for 10 years. But, if you asked what kind of tile you thought would look good, I'd tell you... I mean you did ask...

I am teaching at a college program, and my boss works in career development. So I'm seeing the newbies to this industry, their enthusiasm, and how they get information. There is a thirst for it. I just don't think they have the desire to weed through a lot of "stuff" to find what they need.

If I was running the website (and I'm not lol), I'd keep the forums going for now. However, I'd cut them down a lot, and definitely get rid of the lavatory. Too many people might stop by and read a few things completely unrelated to aviation that they don't agree with and get turned off forever. That's unfortunate. I'm sure after a week everyone who likes to argue in the lavatory will have found a new Reddit or Facebook group to pontificate about politics.

Next step: Make a Discord. Link it from the forums.

You can build announcements (things like job fairs, recruiting events, etc.), resources (links to manuals, books, good websites, etc.), chat pages (maybe even make an "off topic chat" so people can argue, but those will stay contained and people can easily avoid clicking on it). Even more great would be voice channels. Hold "chat nights" with a couple airline pilots to chat and answer questions from newbies. How cool would it be for some private pilots to get on Discord on a Saturday night and talk to three or four actual airline pilots? Most of my students have never actually talked to one. Sure, there might be some goofballs that come by and ask ridiculous questions, but maybe they are in need of some mentorship.

Discord actually has forums, but I like the format here better. What I do like about their forums is you can sort by topics. So you could put "airlines" or "corporate aviation" and "military" and it'll filter threads on only those topics. For you Derg, I think it might be a refreshing project to tackle something new to build from the old. Make a QR code for the Discord that we can save to our phone, so I can tell a student "here, scan this and join in, these people can answer some of your questions." Maybe some people here might enjoy doing some help for a few students who have questions about cross-country flight planning and the E6B? Like a virtual office hours?

Maybe it'll flop. But I'll say my students talk a LOT on Discord in the Aviation Club, and do a lot of sharing on their class groups on Signal. They're looking for something like JC, message forums are just sooooo 2003.

Just an idea.
