The Canadians "get it"

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

Its nice to see some pilots not falling for that trick, although I wish Boeing could have kept the order.

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

Seriously though, do pilots ever vote for lower wages so the company can buy new planes? Thats unbelievable if they do!

Comair voted for a pay freeze.

Pinnancle also comes to mind. They have shiny new jets with crappy pay.

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

As a half-Canuck, I'm glad that those AC pilots stood strong, but on the other hand, I'm bummed that we won't be seeing 777s carrying the Canadian flag anytime soon...

Thats crazy! That kind of stuff doesnt happen in other industries. I dont see any doctors taking paycuts so they can build new hospitals or lawyers taking paycuts so new courthouses can be built (bad example, but still, thats nuts!)Doesnt the value of the airline go up for its stock holders when new assets such as A/C are acquired? Somebody has to be cashing in or the company wouldnt have bought new planes.

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

Actually, the doctor/hospital example isn't that good. There are a whole bunch of docs out there working at hospitals that pay less then others just because of some new cool machine. (Gamma Knife comes to mind).

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

Yes, very smart move on their part. If they don't have the 777s on the property the company can't make them fly it.

Now they need to remove the union leaders who recommended they vote yes.

I was just thinking how corrupt unions have apparently become! How long ago did the change take place, that unions no longer really represent their pilots? I know the union at USAir has really shafted their pilots, and it seems to be a common thing nowdays?

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

Nah, a union is only as effective as their elected leadership.

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

And if you don't like the leadership get off your lazy @$$ and vote the screwballs out. Unions are as only as good as the activity/involvement of their members. Hmmmm kinda like our government. Funny.

It's always irritating to see someone who benefitted from a union, after he or she "gets theirs," stand around and snipe at the very organization that helped them "get theirs."

Are you a USair pilot? In what ways did the union shaft their pilot group exactly?

I can tell you that, while not perfect, my union is seen as the savior for our pilot group. There is no doubt in my mind that our expectations as career pilots are higher with the unions than without. That reason alone, besides what ALPA has contributed to airline safety, is a good reason to keep unions around.

If you think this career is in the dumps, now, I hate to think where we'd be without our organized pilot groups.

Is that what that was, sniping? The pilots voted to not fly the 777 for those rates, so they won't. Now it's time for new leadership who can take them in the direction they want to go. Isn't that about the situation?

I personally think their leadership had it right. But the pilots voted to go another direction. Since it's a democracy, by definition it's the right move. I don't know much about CALPA but I've been supportive of most of the moves ALPA has made during the current crisis. In fact I can't think of any place I differ except when they get into AFL-CIO politics.

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

I simply have to take the dissenter position here. I don't think the union ought to have THAT much control over AC.

I don't agree that the AC union was correct in this vote and I blame AC's management even more for allowing this group to have such a strong influence on the future of the entire company. From what I've read, the union's focus was on the pay scale for the larger 777-300ER. The pilots wanted more pay b/c it is a larger aircraft. The long term results of inhibiting AC's growth as well as the cost savings AC could have realized as a result of this order (e.g. common cockpit in the 777/787 and similar engines GE90/GenX) SHOULD have been more important that bickering over the extra seats on the 773. AC's growth and cost-saving strategies have now been tossed out the window and the future of the company is once again in question. I just don't see how jeopardizing the future of the airline over an extra 50 seats in the 773ER is smart.

Food for thought...My neighbor was an L-1011 Captain for Eastern. I asked him a few weeks ago what killed Eastern and his one-word answer was "unions". I worry for AC now.

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

Who says Air Canada ever had any intention of actually purchasing the aircraft?

It very well have been a negotiating tactic much like a parent telling a child that he'll take the family to Coaster Kingdom if his sister drops that lousy bum she's dating.

Personally, I sense it had more to do with negotiating tactics rather than "the evil union out of control". But of course, the Canadian government is probably getting an earful from Boeing about six bill in sales, Air Canada is probably pleading with the legislators about 'evil, powerful unions', and they'll probably get a sympathetic ear.

Keep in mind that it's a contract. If you tell your landscaper that you want him to groom your neighbors yard after he does yours, but you'll work out the payment details after the work starts, he's going to say "Ungh, talk to the hand, sista!"

Keep in mind that the most profitable carrier is also the most unionized as well.

Re: The Canadians \"get it\"

With some of the anti-union sentiment I've seen here, I fear for the future. The only thing that gives me hope is I remember sorta feeling the same way before I had a clue about the reality of being an airline pilot.

Same here, on both counts.

I think my first week at a regional took care of all that!
