The big arrival in Phoenix

Stay off the avenues and "baseline" ain't! :)

Aw, Doug!

Baseline ain't so bad anymore. They're fixing that area up nice. Baseline east of 48th street (Tempe and eastward) are decent areas. Besides, I'm biased. My first address in AZ was on Baseline in Tempe. :D

Although, I agree with you on the Avenues, some of those areas are shady!

:yeahthat: True dat! I guess he already found out that you need to be in an amored vehicle if you want to travel Indian School RD. Baseline isn't as bad as Van Buren! Stay away from 410 N. 44th Street Suites 100 & 700 at all costs. It's really bad there!;) Downtown Tempe is awesome especially during the summer since most of the ASU students are gone. Rosatti's pizza is the bomb! Best pizza in PHX, ya gotta try it!

I'll PM you my digits. And stay outa Maryvale, lol!

Now the next magic trick is getting you to answer your phone! :)

Where is Maryvale?

Exactly what, what where I guess, is baseline? Sounds like I really don't want to know.

Welcome to PHX; and I'm sure glad I'm not there!:) Welcome back to the states.

Glad to be back, more then I can explain!

Well look, here's the thing. We have been here less then a week, and that is really not enough time in an area to start to trash talk. I don't know where everyone live around here, and the last thing I want to do is rag someone's area.

BUT......

I can say that when I'm driving around an area, and I pass by things like "Mo' Money Pawn Shop," yeah, if we were in a Bradley I would have certainly told my wife to lock the hatch and go and mount the 7.62!

Oh snap, that was you bro?

Sorry bout that. When you called I was in the movie theater watching Pirates of the Carribean with some friends, then we went out to dinner.

I'll have to call you later today.

Maryvale, is one of the PHX ghettos, it's on the avenues!

Baseline Rd is down in Tempe, Mesa, and some other burbs. It's pretty long. Mostly restraunts, apartments, strip malls, the Tempe Mall and and so forth.

I lived there almost a year and still didn't explore most of metro PHX! Oh and the address I gave 410 N. 44th Street is Mesa's HQ. Stay away like it was the depths of he-double hockey sticks!:panic:

Yeah, that we was me. I thought that something was up, or maybe you were asleep, so I just figured I'd catch you sometime today.

We're just chillin' today anyway, no house hunting over the weekend, we're going a bit house crazy at the moment so we need a break.

As for the Maryvale area, well now that I found it on the map I realize that this is around where we were driving the other day. It is also right around that area where I was thinking "A 50 cal on the roof wouldn't be such a bad thing right now!"

Pirates - worth it, not worth it?

Eh, did you happen to see the second one? It was much like that, a decent movie that could have been shorter, but wasn't bad, just good, not excellent.

This time out they were just explaining more of the story, and tieing up loose ends.

All in all, I didn't come out disapointed, and was entertained. And I wasn't angry or again disapointed like I was leaving Spiderman.

If you and DT have nothing to do on a weekend sometime in the near future, go see it. If not, then rent and you'll still enjoy!

I see the area you are talking about now (Looking at a map). So far we have only been south of the I-10 once, and that is when we landed!

Then again I suspect we will head over that way sometime next week. I know there is an IKEA in Tempe, and once we move into to a house our stuff is going to be about a week behind us, so I really don't want to see just how hard the hardwood floors are, so I think some "Emergency furniture" is in order. IKEA to the rescue!

You need to be aware that in the metro area, yes even in Scottsdale and Tempe, you can go from a great neighborhood to the ghetto in 2 blocks. It is the craziest place I have ever lived. You just need to drive around, go back after dark or in the evening to see how it changes, and watch for the soft signs (grafitti, etc) of decay.

Welcome to the Valley of the Sun.

At least you don't have to worry about the "Baseline rapist" and the snipers anymore! I asked myself what I got myself into when we're living there.:panic:

Welcome to the Valley of the Sun.

We have gotten a taste of that first hand this week when we did our drive around. You’re right, we thought it was pretty amazing how the areas shifted so quickly. Some of the areas we drove through we wouldn’t consider driving back through at night, we have seen enough already….Thanks you very much. :)

We are going to venture into Tempe and Mesa later today, or perhaps tomorrow. This will be our first excursion below the I-10, so it should be interesting. We are not going there really looking for anything, except IKEA, so basically just looking around.

Thanks for the welcome Doc, I’ll be over your way soon.

Is that where the whole “Baseline Rapist” thing was? And the sniper incident? That was over there too?

We were still in Europe when all of that was going on, so we didn’t hear about it so much. Well, glad to know that it is all over now. We just closed on a rental house in Glendale, way way (WAY) up north. I figure we will be out of the mainstream goings on.

Where exactly did you live when you were over here Bubba?

Yeah it was pretty hectic during that time. everyone was always looking over their sholder hoping they weren't going to get sniped walking down the street. Women were scared to venture out at night. Crazy stuff.

We lived in Tempe on the corner of University and Priest. It was just a quick trip to the airport and to work at Mesa HQ. We were a couple of blocks west of ASU and Max's favorite employer Chase Bank!
Downtown Tempe is nice, there's several good restraunts, bars and shops. Our neighborhood sucked; a lot of crime and drug dealing.

Well, I have seen as low as $3.03 already (Not that this eases that blow much). However, like I mentioned in the last post, now that we have taken a drive around I already know a few areas that we don't need to drive through again (Without a M2 Bradleyfighting vehicle that is).

You mean hanging out on 24th St. and Van Buren WASN'T a good idea???

If you're anywhere near Carl Hayden highschool, you need to be in an M2!

:laff:

I guess we got here at the right time.

I actually think it might have been a benefit that we moved here in the blind. Neither of us had ever been to PHX and we didn’t know much about any of the areas that make up the region. We also decided not to pass judgment, or to try to determine an area to live in, prior to our arrival.

We did get various opinions and some helpful hints from Kristie, a few folks on Pilot Families, and from a few friends that knew the area a bit, but we made a commitment that we would not even consider an area until we arrived and had a chance to look it over.

I’m glad we did!

So now we have found a rental house that we should be able to move into by next week, and we both love the area. I’m not exactly sure what area it falls under, the city boarders over here are really whacky!

I don’t know? I’ll have to look on the map to see it we have passed it by, but from your post I suspect it’s not!

OK, we’ll keep it in mind. I don’t suspect that we’ll be doing a lot of driving into the city. The whole idea of moving away from Hamburg was to move out of the city. We have had enough city to last a while, we’re going to try to be ‘burbinites’ for a while!
