Terror in the skies?

I think we've got like 30,000 flights per day. How do you want to profile the say, 100 passengers on each flight? That's three million people, my friend.

Let's take the example of a guy who's sweating profusely, checking his watch every ten seconds.

Is that because he's a businessman travelling to Omaha to meet with a huge client who might miss his flight because of the line? Or is it because he's the next Timothy McVeigh?

Dave, as far as the threats from the terrorists, they are real, and nobody, myself included, will downplay them. The hard part is to find a way to fight them without destroying the civil liberties that you and I need to have if the American way of life is to continue.

Remember how they used sarin in the Tokyo subways? Now, if some sicko from that cult escaped, and tried it in the US, I sure as hell don't want everyone staring at me when I get on the subway. And I don't want the cops searching my bags just because I look like that guy.

I see your point. I guess the hard part is to find the line between effective security and indivdual liberties. When a little old lady on my airplane passes out from a blood sugar crisis because TSA took away her hyperdermic I have a problem with that too, although treating her like a potential threat is all very fair. It's just not even remotely good security.

If the moderate, peaceful muslims don't take responsibility and start cleaning up their own house I fear they will receive some of the scrutiny you spoke of. For sure, if al Queda is able to hit us as hard as they hope to, you will see a new attitude. Let's just hope we don't ever act as badly to muslims as the French do to jews.

Maybe we should scrutinize Christians because a few of them have bombed abortion clinics.

Whoops!

Of course. Why wouldn't we? There are Christian groups advocating the murder of abortion doctors and bombing of clinics. They are scrutinized and arrested. Often, I'm sure, by other Christians. So that's a little cleaning of your own house. BTW I am not a Christian.

Annie Jacobsen wrote a follow up based on reaction to her piece. Interesting feedback from some airline people.

I really enjoyed reading the articles. I am sure it happens all the time, these dry runs. For every dry run they do, we do as well. In the Marines we called it CAX and we took what we learned there to the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq and we kicked ... I hope and pray that another 9/11 will not happen but should my services be needed again to the Corps I will be ready. Hopefully this time ROE will be a bit different and we can settle things on their terms. Just my .02.

Thanks for the service. Yes I believe there have been dry runs. It was a hot item for a while and then seemed to kind of fade. Let's keep our fingers crossed and stay vigilant.

The terrorists seek to change our way of life. Bombing things is not the only way they can succeed. They also can suceed by scaring us into changing our way of life into something less American. They have succeeded if we abandon our way of life in exchange for supposed security.

Remember the charter of our country is about freedom and liberty first, the government second. It is a great shame that we, as Americans, have forgotten who we are!

Agreed.
