Terrible 2's...

Through some miracle, my son has made it past 5 with no cast or stitches. He did just have to have an abcessed tooth pulled though, he hit it and knocked it loose on his friend's head 2 years ago, it seemed fine though till he hit again and then it abcessed. He was pretty excited to lose a tooth. My daughter is the one I'm more worried about, we caught her at the top of a 9 foot ladder while Grandma had her back turned. My son is the more cautious one, and she's just plain crazy.

Child services isn't involved this time. Once we said he fell off playground equipment, it was the "Well....he IS a boy." In fact, we don't even have to deal with them from the leg issue. That case was closed about a month ago, so no more worries with those people.

Hope your kids arm gets better.

For the CPS, do they interrogate you or something if you bring your kid into the hospital? Or does the doc report it if he thinks there was abuse involved? My son is only ten months old so he isn't too self-destructive yet. he is just trying to walk(and looking really goofy at that).

Every time I've taken my boys into the urgent care place or the ER they've asked what happened, and want to hear the whole story of how the injury happened. I think they try to "read" the parent and see if they're BSing or not, and also the nature of some injuries can (though not always) be indicitive of abuse/neglect.

Some injuries (like a femur fracture) are normally not just an accident. In Gavin's case, his leg was a total freak accident that involved a twisting motion and a VERY hard floor. If it's a fracture like that, the hospital is required to report it. Like Amber said, they'll give you the third degree on what happend......multiple times. They're looking to see if you crack or your story changes. My wife had a serious strike against her since I wasn't there to verify her story. She was home alone with Gavin when the leg incident happened. It's a rare break and also common in abuse cases, so that triggered the question. In my opinon, they got TOO aggressive. They wanted to know why I didn't come home immediately and started saying that was suscpicious. There really wasn't much I could do other than sit next to the hospital bed, and we needed the money I was making gone in order to cover the hospital bills. That didn't make any difference to the Gestapo, though. I finally DID call the base manager to take me off the trip when the police officer in charge told my wife "Well, it doesn't look good. You might want to get a lawyer." and more or less threatened her in our home. The guy was such a dick if I had been there, I probably would have been arrested for striking an officer. As it was he accused my 78 year old father in law with emphazema of threatening him and blocking his way in our hallway when he leaned against the wall to catch his breath.

As for the arm, looks like we've got about another week or so, and the cast will be off. Docs say he's healing really well. This break didn't trigger any kind of investigation. If I fell 5 1/2 feet and landed right on my elbow, I'd have a high likelihood of breaking it, too. And I'm 32. :)

Downside of the leg fracture is we're going through genetic screening and test now to see if Gavin has osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bones.

Sharpie + Carpet = Bad.

I can get a lot of stains out of a lot of things, but I don't think I've got an answer to that.......

Hi
This type of stain is one of the hardest to get out the carpet.
I would recommend using a wet vac and slowly pour hot almost boiling water (from a kettle) on the spot and vacuum it up at the same time, (this will open up the dye ports on the carpet fibre releasing the stain. and remove the residue from the carpet).
If the stain is still visible than try putting Dawn dishwashing liquid (4 or 5 drops into one cup of water) or carpet spotter. Dampen the spot letting it soak on the stain for about 5 minutes and repeat step one. After this you should rinse the area again with the wet vac and hot water. If this doesn’t work try using orange glo or even 409. The most important thing to do is rinse the stain with a wet vac and hot water from a kettle to remove all the reside, or the spot may come back.

Only as a last resort if you have rubbing alcohol Blot the chemical onto the spot and then remove with a towel and repeat, keep on doing this until stain is gone or you stop getting colour transfer. Then rinse the stain with a wet vac and hot water to remove all the reside,

Please be careful with what product you uses (neutral PH carpet cleaning solution is best). Please DO NOT put anything on the carpet that was not made for carpet.

There is (or used to be) a product sold in supermarkets called, "Stain Devil," or something like that. It's in a small yellow container and comes in different formulas for different stains. Each one I used actually took out the stain it was formulated for, so if it's still on the market, give it a try! Otherwise, get a new carpet (or new 2 year old!) ;)

Hmmmm....we'll try a few of these recommendations and see what we get. I thought about trading in the 2 year old, but when he came up later and said "I sowwy daddy"...I forgot about the carpet. Shame on us for leaving him unattended near pens for 4.5 seconds. :)

My sister-in-law told me "forget the terrible twos, wait until the f$%^&ing fours"! She was right. My son picked up quite the attitude after going to preschool and starting school. I heard it gets better when they are around 10-11 though. I can't wait for him to get out of the "know it all" stage he is in now. Don't know if this applies to girls.

owww... I was wondering how my DH knew how to get it off the carpet last weekend. I was super impressed when he took out the rubbing alcohol and got the stain out, then announced, "Sharpie's are alcohol based, so alcohol takes it out" He read this post - NICE!!

By the way, mother of five telling you, three is WAY worse than two. Two is a warm up for three. Sorry!

Amber, can you still find Stain Devil in the grocery store?

I dunno, I'd never heard of it before!

I'm just happy to hear that there IS a way to get Sharpie out of carpet! We have Sharpies (Bill likes them) and we have carpet, so chances are it's just a matter of time.......

With our son (who turned two in June) I would say the "Terrible Twos" have been more of the "Typical Twos." The most frustrating for me is that he is mastering the art of selective hearing. The funniest thing is when he tries to roll/bat his eyes. Probably the most typical thing is he is not fond of the concept of sharing whether its friends at daycare or cousins playing with "his" toys. Hopefully with the next one on the way he'll learn to share.

Ya know. We've gotten lucky with Gavin and the whole sharing thing. He's awesome with it at day care, and he might be a little TOO sharing at home.....especially with the dog.

"Kami!....Eat cracker!"

As he tries to jam a cracker in the dog's mouth.
