Ted Stevens and Bypass

I'll never get used to this mindset. I'm all for trade unionism, but the fanatics always wind up spoiling it for everyone else. Do you want any competition at all? How small is "too small" for a 737? I fly a dinky little beat up turboprop for a "mom n pop" 135. I also work less and make more than any regional FO I've ever known. Competition works.

Dutch harbor's runway is only 3900' long, there's no real way to make money in there with a 737. Alaska Airlines tried, no joy, nac and Reeves tried, no joy. Turboprops are super efficient of this kind of operation.

Actually, no, I don't. I want a complete return to the early days of air line regulation where routes, pricing, equipment, etc... was all bid within the CAB framework.

NAC, Everts, and Alaska have screwed the post office repeatedly up here when it comes to mail. They don't offer decent service, they aren't reliable, and they don't represent the reality of the situation.

Where's Velo? I can't wait to hear his response to this. :)

Wish in one hand and poop in the other...that will never happen. People have witnessed the efficiencies created by competition, and there is no way they're going back. If we want to protect the standard of living of pilots, we have to choose battles that can be won. Besides, too much protection could wind up pricing most of us out of a job.

*shrug*. I'd rather pay a little more and get planes that at least run on time. But the day of inflation-adjusted $500k salaries, trolly-dollies, rock-star treatment, etc are over. Certainly the government must do more regulating that it is doing now, I think anyone with any knowledge of the system sees that this is the only way anything gets fixed. But it's simply not a reasonable expectation to have a fully regulated system again. Aviation has become the Greyhound of the skies, inflation-adjusted prices are as low as they've ever been, gas crisis or no. People are unwilling not to mention most likely unable to give that up. Growth is always a double edged sword.

ARE YOU NUTS!? So you want to make the airlines socialists? My the airline passenger pay 10% of the cost of the run and have the U.S. Government pick up the rest?

Efficiency? Is that what you call this utter mess?

And I bet you want User Fee's on general aviation because they slow down your RJ?!

I guess I can add one more person to the list of JC users that don't know the definition of the term "socialist." :banghead:

I don't fly an RJ, but yes, I support user fees for corporate aviation. Real general aviation should get an exemption.

I don't know about those user fees. My aviation law teacher was extremely against them. Once you get them going on corporate then they are going to wonder why GA gets to use the same facilities but not pay more. Slippery slope in my humble opinion.

For what its worth both my wife and I have absentee ballots in the uncounted total with votes for Begich. That's 2 at least.

I also feel compelled to add that I live in a Vill served by bypass mail. Ace took over our route about 4 months ago and the reliability they have brought to mail delivery just bumped our standard of living way up! B4 Ace we might get mail twice a month...every once in a while it we'd luck out and get delivery twice in one week! At this point Ace is bringing us USPS three times a week with regularity! I almost feel American again! If only someone woudl bring it to my door...then I'd be set! This bypass mail is a big deal not only for the jobs it creates, but out here we literally need it for life, consider medicine deliveries. Things get dicey when people are waiting for meds and their package lies fallow buried in a crate deep w/n Ak Air's bldgs out at Cordova for a few weeks until it matures enough to warrant delivery. As a pilot who will ~ with luck ~ have his Comm ticket by June I hope you're right about Begich! I would love to be able to head to Anch and fly some of that mail around given how critical it is to Vill life. (Well...we could do w/o all the pop...but it wouldn't be a Bush Vill w/o it I reckon.)

The State of Alaska conducted the absentee ballot count today. Mayor Mark Begich is now three (3!!) votes ahead of Ted Stevens. Yet another reminder of the importance of getting out to cast your vote. Each one counts.

yeahhhhhh boyeeeee!

Based on where the remainder of the votes are coming from, it looks like Begich will only increase his lead by the end of the count. Good news! Now it's time to focus on the Franken recount, and most importantly, the Georgia run-off.

I'm stoked! HERE COMES THE BYPASS, YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Premature post on my part...they still have 40,000 plus ballots to count (they counted 45,000 today) and won't certify the results until 11/21 or 11/22.

I'm not premature this time, Stevens conceded.

Relieves me not only for the bypass mail, but it is nice to know one is living in a state that isn't crazy enough to elect a convicted felon.
