Tanker W/B

Or if the Wing Commander is flying. As his IP I guarded the stick closely.

Am I the only one here that has refueled from a KC-97?

Probably so. I vaguely remember KC-97s of the AZ ANG on the ramp at PHX and taking off/landing back when I was a kid.

Have an old pic of me on the old Terminal 1 ramp at PHX, standing on the ramp at the airstair truck by a Hughes AirWest DC-9 waiting to board, and the AZ KC-97s are across the south runway parked.

I'm a bit of a mil aviation dork, and I will admit I had to google KC-97. I'm guessing you are the only one. That is like the tanking version of walking uphill to school both ways :)

Whar are the currency requirements for tanking? Do you guys change your procedures for guys regaining currency?

If there was currency for the tanker in the fighter community, it must have been pretty long in duration (like every 6 months, maybe).

In both initial training, and follow-on continuation training at home station, tanking was seen as more of an afterthought than anything. It was assumed that since you flew formation and planned and executed radar and visual intercepts with regularity, that you could make it to and from the tanker.

In my F-15E initial training, the first trip to the tanker was an add-on to a regularly scheduled BFM syllabus sortie.

That actually makes complete sense.

Just reread one of my posts. Cripes I need to proof read better after editing.

Refueling speed with the '97 was 230 kts. The AOA drag was so high we had to tap burner to stay in position.

Just reread one of my previous posts. Cripes I need to proof read better especially late at night. Why does Derg put a time limit on editing?

That's pretty damn cool. How long do these transfers take? I mean, if opsec is an issue, I get it, but I can picture a scenario where you either need monster pumps to move fuel around quickly or you have an insanely busy flight engineer.

The most is like 1,200 gallons a minute.

For us as the tanker we have to do so many rendezvous, so much tanker AR, and tanker AR with the auto-pilot off every 6 months. Don't know the exact number of each off the top of my head.

Was a cool plane to see flying around, the radials popping and loud when they'd go to idle.
