Yeah I agree. One thing to note, Hockey players are nowhere near the size of rugby players. Just think if you took someone from the all blacks, taught him how to skate, and then let him loose in a hockey game. There would be some destruction!
 
Hockey is a much harder sport. It is two unnatural things that you have to learn and do at the same time.
 
I am glad to say I didnt watch one game all season, and not once during the playoffs. After a while, I just started to find it boring, and did other things instead..I dunno, its just me
 
Florida winning is a joke to hockey. Sure the team is great and the fans are great. It's just not hockey country. It's insulting to all the teams in the north that struggle years to get to the cup. This one team gets there in a few years and wins. We'll see how hockey crazy they are in a couple of years when things turn sour again....
 
Why is it a joke? That is a bunch of BS. The northern teams have been playing for years. They should have already won their cup. They should be insulted that they weren't good enough. Tampa has been in the league for 12 years.

Excuse me but I was able to get real cheap Caps tickets this year. Pittsburgh didn't exactly fill their arena either. Don't diss on Tampa because they are fairly new to hockey.

So what, in your infinite wisdom, is "hockey country"??? If you're going to say that "hockey country" is a place that has snow - then answer these questions:

1. The Stanley Cup is played in what month?

2. In what season is that month?

3. How much snow is on the ground in YOUR neck of the woods during the Stanley Cup?

4. How many hockey arenas are outdoors?

5. What's the temperature of the ice inside?

6. What's the temperature of the ice outside?

7. What difference does it make where an arean/team is located?

Sounds to me like whatever team you root for wasn't good enough to make it this year and you're pissed. Too bad!

Like it or not, the Tampa Bay Lightening own the Stanley Cup this year. Their names will be on it FOREVER.

Maybe you should cry to your teams GM - you might get about as far as you're getting here.

I dont mind who has a hockey team. Remember, there are alot of old snow birds from the north that live in Florida, that is why they came out from the get go with multiple teams. Hockey country is the north, but hockey fans are everywhere. Now will you see any professionals coming from the South? Not likely, your skills are learned on the pond, not in the rink.They just dont get enough ice time. I am glad to see hockey expanding, lets just hope the management figures out what hockey really needs. Congrats shooter, did you ever make it to one of the games
 
I feel that both teams worked hard for the cup, but I would have liked to have seen the cup back in Canada. I can say that what happened to the entire city of Calgary during the playoff run was amazing. The support, energy, and partying from Calgary was awesome. On the note of the salary caps, normally I would be against the idea but I think it would be a good thing for the NHL. It is hard for some Canadian teams to stay afloat when they have to pay such huge salaries to the players. Yes it is true that two underdogs were in the finals this year, but I feel in all fairness some sort of a limit should be put on the salaries to allow all the teams to be competative.
 
Let me just take the example of the Caps again. They had to dump payroll and sent all their big names off this year. Jagr, Bondra, Gonchar, Lang, et al. And what happened is that they ended up with a bunch of no names that nobody came to watch. It is similar to the situation that occurs with baseball in Minnesota or KC.

Small market teams, and teams without a owner who is willing to lose money to win a Cup, don't have the financial resources to compete in that kind of market.

The NFL has it down right. Every team has an alloted amount of money to spend. Then it becomes a much more level playing field and it also makes the game more interesting. Green Bay has just as much of a chance to win the Super Bowl as does either New York team.

I like that system. Come on, John and Emily, it's socialism at its best!

Jeff Halpern plays for the Caps and grew up in the DC area. Not quite the South, but certainly not the frozen tundra.

There are a few guys from charleston playing in various teams in the ECHL. Granted that isn't the NHL but it is a start. I bet you in 20 years you will see some good players coming up out of the south. The Nascar division of the NHL will be alive and well.

If that's your stance, I would say that Philly doesnt deserve a baseball team. Its easy to say, take away someone else's team... The thrashers are pretty well liked in Atlanta, it just hasnt caught on as much as it will. But to hear people say that people in the south dont need hockey because they dont have ice.... that's just stupid.

Contrary to what you might think, there are PLENTY of teams out there in the north who do not sell out EVERY game of the season.

Secondly, the St. Pete Times Forum is THE biggest arena in the NHL at a 22,000 seat capacity (if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but that's my understanding). If the seats look "empty" it's because the place is freakin' HUGE.

If there were not enough fans/media coverage to keep a team here, believe me - the team would have been gone LONG ago.

Then it's time to take teams away from half the league. Most teams, believe it or not, do not sell out every game. Bye bye Rangers and Islanders, for example.

I hope you are right!! Hard for me to believe though. You would have to have really good genes to get good, not being able to play on the ponds starting when you are 3 or 4. I hope it happens, it will spark more interest
 
There isn't any play on ponds but there are a ton of youth leagues. I started my kids playing when they were 6 and 8. i had to stop because man they grow out of their pads too fast. Someone could make a lot of money with an equipment rental company... Hey wait a minute.. Be back later...
 
Tampa is such a crappy city that they ran the wrong story on the Lightning winning the cup! According to the St. Pete Times paper the Lightning lost the game! Talk about support for the team!
