Tony,

I understand that there will most likely be a lockout/strike next year, and probably take up the majority of the season. Why is it again that this will happen? I heard something to the effect of teams saying they cannot compete in total salary with the thriving teams, such as Detroit, Toronto, Philly, etc. because they just dont make the money, due to the smaller fan base? Whats your take?

And then two small market teams, Tampa Bay and Calgary face off for the cup and shut the NHLPA up... Or so you'd hope.

It's the same old story with sports. You've got billionaires (the owners) who don't want to give any more money to millionaires (the players).

However, in the case of the NHL, the owners have a point. The revenue that you get from TV rights just isn't near as big as what the NFL, NBA, and MLB get.

And the average player salary has gone through the roof. Once upon a time, I made more money than a lot of the guys playing for the Caps. Now, Jaromir Jagr by himself is getting more money from the Caps than I will likely see in my lifetime, and he's not even playing for them anymore!

What you've got with the NHL is a situation where the player pay is comparable to the Big Three sports and the revenues just are not. That simply cannot continue. In the days of the dot com bubble, you had corporations picking up luxury boxes and people willing to drop hundreds of bucks on a pair of tickets. No more.

The NHL couldn't even get guaranteed money from NBC for their latest TV contract. That tells you just where it stands in the pecking order. There's no way in hell that the NFL, NBA, or MLB would ever even consider a revenue sharing type deal without any guaranteed money. The NHL had to take it.

The NHL has some serious problems that it has to work out. I think that the owners will have to do some revenue sharing with the players, and the players will have to accept some kind of salary cap.

Hockey just doesn't translate well to television. Which is a shame because I think there is no game greater to watch. The fan base just isn't big enough to pay these huge salaries. I think Hockey is in for a troubled stretch.

I love hockey, but do I want to watch every Red Wings game through the season? No not at all. Since it has been tamed, it has becomea bit boring. Some of you probably do not agree with fighting, but it has its purpose, to control the cheap shots on the ice. Now Bettman has tried to tone down the fighting, but there are worse inuries coming from sticks, and harsh cheap shots.

You all would be amazed at how many "fair weather fans" we have here in Tampa, Lightning games used to be dead. Tonight the game was sold out of course, but there were also thousands of people standing outside watching the game as it was projected on the side of a parking garage. I am happy for those guys that they won, they worked hard. Ohh, and it is nice that Tampa has actually had good sports teams these past couple of years, we were more than due.

The Wing's can get paid what they do beacuse every single game they play is sold out, or nearly so. It's impossible to get tickets to most games once the season is going on (or so I've found, if you've got the right connections you can get hooked up), and they tickets you do find are pretty expensive. The fan base is ultra loyal, and they'll pay the big bucks to go see Wing's games. That's not true for all teams. But just because the Wing's can bring in more people and can get paid more does not mean there should be a cap on hockey players pay. As far as I'm concerened, hockey players should be paid more than any other sports teams out there. They work the hardest, and get the crap kicked out of them more than any other sport out there.

Cheers

Well, lump me into that "fair weather fan" category. I freely admit it. I like to see a winner.... especially in a sport I had no prior interest in. I'm actually a HUGE baseball fan, but the Devil Rays owners and management have pissed me off to the point where I refuse to give them $0.01 of my money until they put a friggin winning product on the field instead of "revenue builder" for Namoli.

But, you know what this season did for me and a lot of those other "fair wx fans?" It made us hockey fans. Plain and simple. You can poo-poo it all you want, but when it comes down to it - a fan base has to start SOMEWHERE and if it took a Stanley Cup Championship to do it, so be it.

I can guarandamntee you that there are TENS of THOUSANDS of "new" Buc fans since they won a Super Bowl and frankly - I LOVE IT!

Doesn't bother me one bit!!

Well. What a game! Way to go Bolts! I was really happy to see them win. I am not really a Tampa fan but seeing as how the caps were just barely edged out of the playoffs this year and I am from Tampa, I figured come play off time, I'd cheer for them. Its the first time the team I wanted to win a cup at the beginning of the playoffs that has actually won.

That team has some amazing talent on it. I tell you what though. Calgary gave them a hell of a fight. Kiprisoff is an amazing Goalie. He gave Calgary a chance to win last night. It was great to see my hometown team win the cup. That’s a super bowl and a Stanley cup. Go Devil Rays!!! HEHE Yeah right.

The league has a lot of changes to make. It has the same problem as baseball in that there isn't any limit on what a team can pay its players. You have teams like Detroit that spend what two or more teams spend on players. That’s why they won the west this year. Those of you that know me know I am a free market kind of guy. However when it comes to sports, I am not a fan of the company that owns the hockey teams. I am a fan of the teams. I'd like to see all the teams on an equal footing. I want to see the team from Nashville have as much chance to compete as the team from Detroit or New York. The NHL is losing money. They had independent auditors examine their finances and they are really losing money. The players need to agree to league wide revenue based salary cap similar to what the NFL has. They also need to start showing regional games on TV. I live in South Carolina. Why in the world do I always end up watching Colorado and Detroit???

In any case great game Bolts!!!

Dammit.... first the superbowl, now the stanley cup!!! Well enjoy it, our day in Atlanta is coming, I can feel it.

Well, seeing as how the Flames USED to be Atlanta's team....... take solace in that ya'll came close - kinda, sorta....
