How do you know you have the performance required to takeoff in that condition? There are no charts for a reduced power takeoff in a Cessna 172 and thus, I'm not sure how you could prove to the FAA that you had the necessary length of runway to takeoff from.
The real problem with this would be if you got near the end, realized you weren't gonna get off the ground and didn't have enough room to stop or put the engine up to full power and takeoff in the remaining runway.
I would not know. I figured he had done it before, and we had 5000 feet of concrete ahead of us. I agree with you. I just found it odd that the day this was introduced to me was the day you posted something about it. Hmmm.
But wouldn't running it over square would assist in performing a torque roll.
By the way, is the top lifting surface of that bi-plane one "wing" or two "wings"?
Not trying to be the devil's advocate or anything but on my CFI ride the examiner had me do a reduced power soft field takeoff. I had heard he likes to do this so I had practiced it before hand but its still unusual. His rational was that everything happens slower so the students can learn more and get a better feel for the aircraft. I dont remember what rpm we used maybe 22-2300 but it got off the ground just fine.
Just as a broad statement, but if you can't answer that question, then it's likely the procedure you're doing is a bad idea.

Not in the metro. I have too much going on to really mess with them. Plus, we don't flip the prop sync on til 400ft anyways.
I'm not sure about your Metro's, but the one's I fly seem to have wires break in the prop sync on a regular basis. The 14.5k's manually sync up great... the 16k's not so much. Stupid Metro's... hahaha! I love them though.

The pratts on the 1900 used to spray enough oil around that the magnetic contactors for the sync would dirty up and the computer would go batty trying to find the magic speed. Not much fun for 8 legs at a time.
