Syncing props on the takeoff roll. Yes or no?

How do you know you have the performance required to takeoff in that condition? There are no charts for a reduced power takeoff in a Cessna 172 and thus, I'm not sure how you could prove to the FAA that you had the necessary length of runway to takeoff from.

The real problem with this would be if you got near the end, realized you weren't gonna get off the ground and didn't have enough room to stop or put the engine up to full power and takeoff in the remaining runway.

I would not know. I figured he had done it before, and we had 5000 feet of concrete ahead of us. I agree with you. I just found it odd that the day this was introduced to me was the day you posted something about it. Hmmm.

Just as a broad statement, but if you can't answer that question, then it's likely the procedure you're doing is a bad idea.

Not trying to be the devil's advocate or anything but on my CFI ride the examiner had me do a reduced power soft field takeoff. I had heard he likes to do this so I had practiced it before hand but its still unusual. His rational was that everything happens slower so the students can learn more and get a better feel for the aircraft. I dont remember what rpm we used maybe 22-2300 but it got off the ground just fine.

All I can say is WOW. I agree with the others...Where are the performance charts for reduced power takeoff?
 
Not in the metro. I have too much going on to really mess with them. Plus, we don't flip the prop sync on til 400ft anyways.

I'm not sure about your Metro's, but the one's I fly seem to have wires break in the prop sync on a regular basis. The 14.5k's manually sync up great... the 16k's not so much. Stupid Metro's... hahaha! I love them though.
 
Back in the day, and no AFJ005 this is not a 1900 story, we would sync up the props of the Navajo Chieftain on takeoff. Reach your pinky over, at full power, and pull the left prop back a hair and, like magic, no wah wah.

Wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah. No thankya. Drove me batty on the Saabomatic when it went completely wah wah on landing too. I'm anti-wah wah.

The pratts on the 1900 used to spray enough oil around that the magnetic contactors for the sync would dirty up and the computer would go batty trying to find the magic speed. Not much fun for 8 legs at a time.

Thank the lord for my Bose headset and a bunch of Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard on my Ipod make similar days in the Metro tolerable!
 
I can't tell if you are playing around or if you are serious. :dunno:

I'm serious about it being a bad idea to takeoff with less than full power in a Cessna 172. There is no flex (reduced power) takeoff data for the aircraft, and thus you will have no way of being able to judge how much runway you need to take off.

A 172 barely gets off with full power. I can't understand why someone would even think it o.k. to do anything but a full power t/o in a 172.

We fly both. You know how finicky the power and speed levers are in the metro. I'd be lucky to get the power levers properly set on the takeoff roll most of the time.:D

In cruise the props are out of sync and you adjust the speed levers to get them into sync. Then theres a split in torque. So you adust the torque so there's no split. Then the props are out of sync again. You adjust this for a few minutes before you finally give in a just take the split in torque or the out of sync props. It's an evil game.:)
