SWA Landing gear collapse at LGA

Alas, he is, and he's on my "trip trade away at any cost/No Fly" list. The knucklehead likes to fly way below Vref on approach, as well. It's like he's taunting the rake of death. (PM Sent.)

You can fly this plane fast without much consequence.

But I'd never touch the white arc. Anybody that does would get my full attention.

Good point. And after my convo with the skipper on the leg in this morning, an interesting question was raised.

The SWA captain that crunched up the nose gear is female, correct? Could gender bias- both for and against- be part of the environment that fosters the attitude that the captain is alleged to have?

The check airman I was just flying with says he still sees gender bias towards female pilots- both for, in the form of regulatory protection, and in manner, via 'protect the girl' man-think, and against, in the form of outright chauvinism. This sort of environment has to become a part of a pilot's approach to things. My first week of ground at the Beagle was taught by a retired female captain- and she had a slew of stories of people who mocked or demeaned her directly or via radio anonymity. Could workplace hostility be creating a dynamic in which a female pilot- especially a captain- has to be aggressive in a manner which can be detrimental to CRM?

I've flown with some women who just aren't pleasant, but think about it. If you were in a world where you were constantly under the microscope, and constantly having to deal with sexism, you might get a chip on your shoulder too.

There seem to be three types:

1. The "one of the guys" female pilot. She will curse like a sailor, and show you all the good porn sites.

2. The "I've had to struggle against the machine" type. She has a chip on her shoulder as a result of all of the pure BS she has had to fight.

3. The "normal pilot" who you can't differentiate on the basis of gender. These seem to be the rarer type. Perhaps they just haven't been around us ass holes long enough? :)

Ladies on here, this is purely an observation. I'm in NO way against women in aviation, and I wish you didn't have to struggle like you do in this "man's world" of aviation.

(I hope this post isn't taken the wrong way...)

Fair enough- thanks for chiming in. I'm sure nobody is offended by an academic observation of the subject and a little candor. At least I hope not. This is the only way we'll get past this sort of thing- we have to drag it out of the holes in our collective psyche where it hides and let the light of truth burn it off.

Like it or not, we carry who we are into the cockpit, and the end result is that this rubs off on people we fly with. But it works both ways, too, and we'll all encounter the good, bad, the ugly for a variety of reasons. If there's a cultural problem because of a demographic shift in the pilot ranks, we should look at it.

People are talking like they know an awful lot about this case when very few acts are actually public. Maybe we should wait until the official report is finalized before making judgments, hmm?

Nayh, judge the sh...ass out of it.

Army world... be a pain in the ass... Flight of two out of Ft. Drum.
Weather was sketchy

Sketchy? Sketchy?!? There's no sketchy Wx in helicopters! And there sure ain't no sketchy Wx in the Army!
Drop and give me 40!

If you really couldn't differentiate no. 3 by gender then she is, by definition, no. 1.

A male assorifice is a just an assorifice. A female assorifice is an assorifice served on a plate of cognitive dissonance.
