SWA going international?

Check out Boeing's 737-700ER, range 5,510 nautical miles:

No one cared when transatlantic service was in 707s, and they have the same cabin cross section as the 737-700ER. Let's just hope the legroom will be the same as in the 707 era. It will be very interesting to see what sort of routes this new derivative will open up. I think a lot of people would be happy to make the trip in a 737 if it either saved them money or saved them the time of an extra connection.

Southwest Airlines on Thursday gave its clearest indication to date that the world's largest low-cost carrier would launch international flights for the first time.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12405290/

I heard a rumoT that they might be contracting the international stuff (Mexico primarily) out to XJET. Inquiring minds and all that ...

International doesn't always mean across the pond. Canada, Mexico, Brazil, etc. are all INTERnational destinations ...

This is only going to fuel the "will WN buy the 787" posts over on that other website...

As far as WN's quick turnarounds...why'd they go to Philly if they're concerned about quick turnarounds? Every single WN flight I've taken that has routed through Philly has been delayed by at least 45 minutes. I avoid Philly if I can.

It would be awesome if they had more frequent flights to South America. Everytime I go to Brazil the planes are packed.

I think CO flies their 737s over the pond out of EWR. I know they have many of them that are ETOPS certified.

Not unless by "the pond" you mean lake erie. CO flys 757-200s (most of which have recently been retrofitted with winglets) to destinations in western Europe from EWR. They also fly to South America from EWR and IAH with said 757s and have recently started LAX-OGG.

Lufthansa subcontracts with PrivatAir to fly 737s and a319 from select German destinations to the States in an all business class layout--not a normal pax configuration.

Southwest and low-fare rivals such as JetBlue and AirTran account for almost all of the new aircraft due to enter the US domestic market and there is concern that their rapid expansion could dent the recent recovery in fares and revenues across the broader industry.

They forgot about Alaska, Frontier, Spirit, as airlines that have new aircraft on order......

How easy is it to get a 737 approved for trans-atlantic flights?

Aloha fly's their 737-700 across the Pacific.... It is a pain to get aircraft approved for ETOPS certification.

I also know that COA operates 1 or maybe 2 flights a day to London from KCLE in the 757. It would be cool if CLE had more of an international appeal to COA, and they operated a 767 or something out of CLE.

Yeah, you are right actually. I was thinking about the LH 737s. But CO does have many of their 737s ETOPs equipped for some reason. I suppose for flying south of the US and so on.

Ah yes, but it appears CVG is the only city in Ohio that supports a reasonably large international market. That's right, another thing Cincinnati is better than Cleveland at, muahahahahahaha :sarcasm:

Actually, CVG is the only city in Kentucky that supports a reasonably large international market.

CoVinGton...

For God's sake the airport's title is the "CINCINNATI/Northern Kentucky International Airport"....Most major airport's are outside the city they serve anyway...But for the record Cincinnati is the metropolitian city the airport serves so....case and point. ha

I lived in the "Nati" for 5 1/2 years and worked at CVG on the Delta ramp. Not sure if CVG has an OH. zip code even though it is physically located in KY. but I know the post office on field does!
