Sunglasses

A'ight, folks, I'm in the market for some shades. Particuarly those suited for flying. What do ya'll recommend? I'd rather not spend too much, but if there's a particular product which really stands out and is worth the expense, throw it out there.

And, er, aviators are outta the question.

On a sidenote, Bob Buck (author of North Star Over My Shoulder, Weather Flying, and Flying Know-How) recommends only sparing use of sunglasses. Supposedly, there's a tendency to become dependent on them, and over time they can weaken the eyes. Any scientific truth to this?

I'm right in there with ya 737. I think the ideal pair of shades would have thin wire temples to not break the seal of your headset, and amber lenses for better contrast to pick out traffic. A decent style of frame would be nice too. Sporty's has a pair called Serengeti Hurikanu that seem to fit the bill, although I've never met them in person. Here's a link to 'em

Aww c'mon...what's so wrong about sporting the Aviators?

I wear glasses, so getting a prescription pair of sunglasses would cost too much.

I had too many bad memories of kids wearing Ray Ban "Aviators" with the Top Gun/Maverick flight jacket around PRC that I wouldn't get caught dead in a set.

Personally, I'm a fan of almost anything Serengetti, but I wear those amber-colored Ray Bans, but NOT pilot sunglasses. Kinda MiB, kind of Matrixy, but not really pilot-like.

Serengeti. I just bought some, and I love them. I was always a $20 or less sunglass-man. No more. Definitely worth the money.

About the Bob Buck thing... I think I've become a little dependent on sunglasses. The thing is, I don't know if they have weakened my eyes. I am more sensitive to light sometimes, but I prefer reducing glare with the glasses.

I have a pair of Serengeti Aviators with the drivers gradient lenses for *gasp* flying. I also have a pair of Serengeti Velocity's which have titanium frames with the drivers gradient lenses which I wear for driving and other day to day activities and sometimes flying. I really couldn't be happier with the Serengeti's. The drivers lenses are awesome, they make clouds and terrain really stand out. Both pairs fit easily beneath my headset.

Linkage to Serengeti's website - Driver's gradient page

I have Ray Ban black wrap-around shades with the grey tint. I wear them quite a bit. I'd rather wear them more often than not, especially flying 8 hour days in Florida. I hate getting those squint-too-much headaches.

Aviatior737:

Go for the Serengetti's. I have used them for many years and they are great and very durable. You can wear them from dawn to dusk. They also can be worn on the brightest days as well as overcast days too. Plus they are not polarized so you don't have to worry about not being able to see certain displays.

Definitely the seringetis. I've had good luck buying from e-bay. Both for personal and gifts. shadesaver.com sells a lot on ebay and has been reliable for me.

Have had one pair of Aviators for over 15 years, knock on wood.

When I buy different styles my kids make fun of me, which really hurts my confidence. Guess I'm typecast.

Ray-Bans with amber tint here. Paid like $85 for them (new) on ebay. I can't remember the name of the style, and Ray-Ban's site sucks otherwise I'd look it up.

I get mine from the dollar store and stock up. I wind up breaking or losing them enough that a spare (and new) pair makes the really nice ones cost prohibitive.

I'm a big fan of polarized lenses, my favorite pair of shades are Maui Jim Diamond Heads. I also just picked up a pair of the brand-new 2004-redesigned Serengeti Aviators. I've always hated how Serengeti's aviator shades look, but the redesigned Aviators look a lot more like the Ray Ban design (MUCH better, IMHO) and include springed hinges for improved fit. And the biggest improvement: they now have polarized lenses! Picked 'em up on sale at Costco for $70 (reg $85)...a sweet deal.

p.s., some people shy away from polarized lenses because they've heard that they can interfere with glass displays in jet cockpits. FWIW, I found no such problems with my Maui Jims in the CRJ-200 Ophir and I got to check out in May at the SkyWest training center in SLC (thanks again, SkyWChris!)

I use to wear the Ray Ban Aviators. They worked great, I just didn't like that everyone else had fake ones that looked similar to them. I bought the Ray Ban 'New Pilot' this year and love them.

I wear Black Ray-Ban Aviators. They're the only sunglasses I'll wear.

I HATE Oakleys...although that seems to be the "trend" now...I've never been much of a trendy guy, though! The only sunglasses I could wear in the Marine Corps and be "truly" within regulations were Aviators (conservative in appearance) - except in the filed out in the stumps or the snow....super-dark "Locs" (as we called 'em) that were required equipment. I still like them, and since no pilots would be "caught dead" with them, I don't have to worry about looking like everybody else...

re: polarized in the cockpit.

Like aloft said, no problems in the CRJ. Anyone seen how the LCD displays in the new Boeings work with polarized?

Chalk up my vote for Serengeti- worth my $149 from Sunglass Hut (ouch).

I also recomend the Serengeti's.....On the other hand I do not recommend getting butt-penetrated like SkyWChris!!! Go to Serengeti's website, find a pair that you like then go to www.froogle.com and type in the name. You should be able to find them for about $60-$80 depending on the model. I got mine for $75 with shipping included.

Chris is a rich airline captain, he can afford Sunglass Hut...

Everybody else, try Costco, they have sales on Serengeti pretty regularly.

Yeah, but computer programmers get all the chicks!!

LOL I wouldnt even be caught dead in the Randolph Military Aviator glasses that got issued to me. I go with a black, plastic Armani set. They only cost me 80 bux, and I absolutely love them. They kind of have a MIB 2 look to them
