Studying is Boring

My schedule keeps shifting which may contribute to the lack of focus. And then I sit for 4 days in a hotel with no concept of the passage of time - so that doesn't help either. But, I'm grinding through. I figure I'll be in one of the next 3 upgrade classes for the triple, so I'd better be ready, right?
Awesome! Glad things are moving over on that side too. Lemme know if you have any long ICN overnights. I’ll be back there on the 29th-30th.

I guess ANC works too.

I lost the ability to sleep past 8am - regardless of when I went to bed - around age 30.
I never was terribly good at sleeping in and it didn't get any better post-30. That said, I conk out great in hotels. It's just that at home, I've got stuff I want to do, versus the nothingness that is the hotel space.

I've always been a night person. Probably even moreso since I worked 3rd shift for 8 yrs. I went to bed last night, or this morning at 6:10 and woke up at 1:30. It was glorious.

I use the Pomodoro technique. You basically study for 25 minutes and take 5 minute breaks, then after a few of those you take a longer 15 minute break. I set a goal to do X number of these a day and it gets me through. When you start out you can do fewer minutes at a time if 25 minutes seems overwhelming.

The hardest part is getting started. A lot of times I find myself wanting to go beyond the 25 minute period, depending if I got into the flow.

Right now, I'm up by 0500 to get out the door by 0530 to meet my students by 0645. And I usually wake up before my alarm.

But as the How Not To Be Your Parents guy in the Geico ad says, "You woke up early. No one cares."
After almost 30 years of waking up at 0500 my inability to sleep in when possible is infuriating.

i always thought that was good motivation until I saw the cars all the strippers at The Golden Nugget were driving. They definitely were doing better than my E-4 ass.

Maybe, but your career will be longer. Their career is greatly affected by age and gravity. Plus there is no retirement/401k system.

+1 to all the tips given here, I usually find attention span wise- I studied with no distractions best when using the "Pomodoro Technique" which is basically setting a timer for 25 minutes reading/5 minute break, or 50 minutes reading/10 minute break and during the break actually getting up and walking around (and getting more coffee of course!)

If you don’t have the time to watch there’s a summary in the comments.

biggest takeaway was to study with absolute focus in 20 minute chunks then take a 10 minute break. Allows me to go through more material, in less time, and retain more.

The second you start to zone out it’s break time.

The second thing that helped me the most is spending most of my study time actively recalling the info. I read it. I cover it up and recall it. I don’t sit there reading it again. I’ll take a quick peak at ONLY the info I couldnt recall.

The goal is to get info into long term memory. Reading for hours on end doesn’t do that.
