Stolen cessna?!?!?!

Heh. I was up flying CPS-MEM while this bozo was doing his low-speed chase. Weirdly, all the military guys were transmitting VHF on center frequency, so I got to hear quite a bit. I guess they were VHF because there were a couple what I'm guessing were Customs citations involved, too (Do they not have UHF?). "Skater", "Omaha", and "Jet", I think... I leave it as an excercise for the reader to figure out who's who. I'm now imagining the F16s tanking up, the KC-10 flying around in big circles, the Citations flying at 5000...your tax dollars at work. Thanks, Cannuckistan!

Incidentally, if you ever hear yourself referred to as a "target of interest", you've been very, very naughty. What, is "bogie" now on the ash-heep of history, along with "suspect"? Sounds too aggressive?

Yeah, but it's like when people complain about the costs of a coast guard search - they'd be up there burning kerosene anyways doing training maneuvers.

Does he get to log any of that? :) Ok so seriously, Fox just reported he flew for roughly 6 hours and had an additional 2 hours of fuel? 8 hours of fuel in a C172? huh?

I thought the same thing. It's been a little while since I flew a -172, but that seems a bit of a stretch. Not only to mention I bet the guy wasn't too concerned with leaning the mixture for a long-range cruise. Oh wait, maybe he was, that's why he didn't notice the F-16s.

Wait...isn't that the model that has the extended range barrels installed? OK, I figured it all out. Those NORAD peeps know EVERYTHING!

Oh, but it comes from another pot of money...and what an accounting pain in the butt that is!!!

There is some :sarcasm: there, but not much.

Yesterday the winds aloft were 30+ out of 330/360 in that area.

what's the stall speed of an F-16 anyway? I would've put it in slowflight to throw a wrench in the intercept maneuver. The story says he flew for 7 hours at 14,000 feet. sounds like an old hangar flying tale to me.

I doubt the F-16 can cruise at 130 knots or less. This guy must of had the power pulled back and ridden the winds to get that kind of range and endurance out of an C172.

After listening to the news they are saying that more than 3 different national guards units flew in support of the "low speed" chase. I am thinking that they were supported by those customs/ice/border patrol aircraft that boris was talking about.

I think it's funny you all are hounding the ANG for tracking a suspect airplane reported stolen and staying out of contact with ATC. Too bad they didn't take threats this seriously on a certain day in September about eight years ago.

Honestly, in the day and age we live in, a small airplane would be a great delivery platform for a dirty bomb or a bio/chem weapon. I am surprised NORAD/SECDEF didn't pull the trigger especially after he was headed straight for a population center such as Madison.

At least the flight school will get the airplane back :)

Actually, he might be my hero.
A low time student pilot flies seven hours, even up to 14,000 and makes it to MO, to land on a country road at dusk.

Brass ones.

Do you not give Mathias Rust any credit?

Honestly I had to wiki that name.

This did stand out though...
At 14:48 near the city of Gdov one of the pilots observed a white sport plane "like Yak-12" and asked for permission to engage, but was denied.[1]

I am glad I'm not instructing in Russia. "That looks like a sport plane...get him".
-------

If russia ever needs invading I now support moving the 82nd in by skyhawk.
"Shock and Awe" worked fine, but just wait until they see "Confused and Amazement". :nana2:

My bad......it happened when I was working on building hours for instrument, that's how I remember it. Didn't know if you're older or not to where you'd have remembered.

Interesting story, and the impact it had on the world political stage though, especially during the Cold War tension of that time.....

It was interesting. It is so interesting you would think people would talk about it more in the aviation circles.
----
And by the way, in '87 the only thing I was doing with airplanes was pretending to fly models around the Living Room while making engine noises. :)

Lol.......like I said, I forget (or don't always know) who the younger ones are! :)

Heck, I have vague memories of watching the evacuation of Saigon on TV while my dad was, and wondering why all the neat helicopters were falling into the ocean.

From the following story:

http://www.denverpost.com/commented/ci_12089681

Patricia Lang, president of Confederation College, said Leon was a naturalized Canadian citizen and had changed his name from Yazuz Berk once in Canada.
Lang said he was well-known to the staff of the aviation school and was considered polite. He had completed his first solo flight and all the training courses for his first cross-country flight, which he had yet to take, she said.

Helluva first solo x-country.
