at most airlines the answer is no. Because they have a policy of no unauthorized electronic devices on durring those times when the sterile cockpit is in effect.

If you want to do it legaly I would sugest calling your cheif pilot or director of flight ops. Nut I will add that you had better have a realy good reson. If you post it on youtube or any other publc site you run the risk of not only getting fired but also having the FAA take action against you as they have at Horizon.

Why not just tape from inside a GA plane and show that to family and friends or ask to tape in the sim... Just some ideas.

Yes it can be done legally.

The stuff the FA says in the back does not really matter too the flight deck.

Because it is up to the operator to decide what is a prohibited electronic device.

Check what your ops manual says - it maybe up to the captain or you may need to get someone up the chain to say you can film it.

Of course it can't be illegal full stop because there have been many professional DVD's made following a whole flight - including the take off and landing from the flight deck using several cameras.

The FAA is taking action against an operating crew member holding a camera and filming the takeoff / landing instead of performing their function.

I dunno... My Ops Manual (as well as just about every other 121 Ops Manual I've seen) is pretty clear about no electronic devices being permitted while operating below 10,000 feet.

A crew member riding in a jump seat is an ACM, and sterile cockpit, usually states that the CA shall not allow any crewmember to engage in any activites not relate to safety of flight. eg, reading, eating, drinking, talking and video taping.

ACM is an additional crew member, so they are bound to the same rules as those seated at the controls. Likewise, they may not consume alcohol.

The Horizon videos were shot by a JS rider... and the entire crew got in trouble.

Of course there is a legal way around this.. just look at ITVW and World Air Routes.

My company has even shot some training videos that have takeoffs and landings in them! (Which the FAA approved as part of a training program)

Hmm..I remember some members on this thread showing videos of landings in PHL set to some really cool music, so who knows...he must have been riding on a different airline that allows it.

Food For Thought:
A group of amateurs built the Ark. (under God's direction)
A group of professionals built the Titanic. (insulted God just prior to its voyage)

funny!

Well the commercial videos that are out there for aviation enthusiasts are certainly not made for training.

I would have to check if these have been made in a US aircraft - as the rest of the world it is still up to the Captain who can come in the flight deck.

My company's manual says nothing about drinking. Eating is a different story.

Beyond a potential training need, why would anyone want to film the cockpit of an airliner (or nearly any aircraft) takeoff/landing? I mean, it's not that exciting.

Well, LGA Expressway visual, for sure, but landing in KPHX? Zzzz...

If it's on video, it could end up on youtube. Personally I'm not comfortable with anyone filming anything at any time, especially in sterile cockpit. There are just too many stories out there.
