Starting 121 career with Sun Country

Is anyone is familiar with the Sun Country hiring process? Specifically if they would realistically hire an applicant with who just meets the requirements for an ATP. The Sun Country website advertises their hiring minimums are essentially the same as most regionals.

Military RW guy with a year til retirement asking.

Are you an RTAG member? There are Army RW pilots hired at Sun Country in the group who might know. Also, Sun Country was at the last RTAG conference doing onsite interviews... next RTAG conference will be in spring near Ft. Hood. Definitely worth going to.

The QOL over there from what I heard is starting to mitigate any positives of being home based in MSP. I have not heard good things from the people over there or have just left.
Yeah.

I mean, it’s probably(?) better than SkyWest.

I am not a member but I am familiar with the program. I think I just might make my way to Hood. Thanks.

I am well aware that Sun Country is on the very low end of pay for LLCs but if the entry requirements are the same as regional carriers but with significantly better pay this seems like the smarter choice for a guy in my situation.

If you can’t see what’s inherently wrong with this statement I’m not sure you’re going to find what you seek here...

-The very fact that pay at Sun Country (or any airline flying 737s) could be compared to regional pay should tell you to stay far away.

-Never mind the pilots working towards a better contract with better pay being undermined by their management’s ability to fill classes with pilots willing to fly a 737 for near-regional wages.

Are they still making people sign a training contract? I’d take my chances with a regional for a quicker upgrade.

Well, that depends on the individual. But the pay is definitely better.
Not really, if you go to somewhere like Envoy and upgrade after a year you will be making for than a second year FO at Sun Country. Plus you're building PIC time to go elsewhere.
Would you say it is better or worse than someone going to Mesa/GoJets/Skywest?
Thats a good question. I havent read their contract. But for flying a 737 they're barely making more, if more, than some regionals. Maybe it would be a decent fit for a MSP person.

The other way to look at it is that prior to getting new contracts, I saw the same talk about Frontier, Spirit and Allegiant. All three are harder to get into than before they passed new contracts. When Sun Country does get a new contract, it’ll be more competitive to get on with them. The biggest downside seems to be the work rules, especially for commuters.

Looking at that other aviation website, if it is reliable, the upgrade time at Sun County is 3 years and 2nd year FO pay is on par or just slightly below regional captain pay.

Sun Country had an upgrade of 3 years for someone hired 3 years ago.

It'll probably continue or drop for a little while with the new Amazon planes, but upgrade times are fluid. Upgrade was 18 months when I was hired at ExpressJet, and I was furloughed after 14 months. It would have been a 10.5 year upgrade, in retrospect.
