My kids are still a little too young for a traditional Waco and I do not want a Cabin. I will eventually get a newer YMF-5. I spent 30 hours in a 500C in October flying in support of Helene recovery. A 500E is on the dream sheet.
Cabin Waco's - particularly the early ones (QDC, UEC, etc) - those are fantastic flying machines. The "new" F-5's have been reported to me as "heavy airplanes" and they have that weird, really high tailwheel assembly plus shortened main gear legs. I think they're neat, but for an open Waco - the pecking order for those "in the know" are as follows (based on just really nice flying machines):
F-2's
RNF's
Straight Wings or (preferably) Taperwings:
But seriously - if you can find a nice and LIGHT UPF-7 or YKS-7 - with an emphasis on "light" - there is not a ton that will fly much nicer. Just pleasant, balanced controls. Outperforms a Stearman on the same power. Great flying airplanes.
