Spotting at Sky Harbor PHX?

I was young, but my father traveled a lot. So I used to frequent the airport a bit. I even flew out of KTUS before it had Jetway's. I remember walking out to the plane... in the elements. So to answer your question, kinda. But they have a few pictures of KTUS from the early 80's. I wish that KTUS would return, but it's long dead.

Speaking of the Viscounts there, they used to get contracted often from that company by various celebrities, notably Rod Stewart and a host of others.

In 1983, one of the Viscounts had a landing gear collapse while landing at TUS, and had singer Lionel Richie and company onboard. The responding CFR crew said Mr Richie was in a compromising position with a few females when they made access to the aircraft during the evacuation. There were also erroneous early reports in the media that Richie had been killed in the accident.

I've read a report of a very nasty sounding America West 737-200 over-run at TUS, haven't seen pics tho. Were you around for that?

That was in 1989. Last major accident they had there of a large airplane. Amazing that with half brakes and no thrust reversers, that (at the time....RW 11L didn't have the current displaced threshold) nearly 14,300' of runway length wasn't enough to get the plane stopped, and it still overran.

Still have the newspaper article on that one.

That's right after takeoff and a left turn on course right after departure from KTUS-PHX. Probably a heading of 320 direct BBALL
