There is an all pilot call being planned. If you do not want yo call the reps directly, you can go straight to the source then. though I'm sure there will be at least 50 guys with the same questions.

Any elected person, which includes reps, officers and committee people (if that particular property elects committee people beyond what is required), ARE responsible to those who put them there. To ignore their direction, input and concerns is done at your own peril.

Every ALPA property is a little bit different. To get a good read on exactly who is responsible to who, you need to read the policy manual for that airline. Some places, the negotiators ARE responsible directly to the MEC. Or so I'm told.... ;)

But more to the point, if stuff is going on, and the torches and pitchforks are on the way, and a rep, officer or committee wonk claims that "the pilots just don't understand", then you have FAILED in your position.

Changed that to reflect the point that this is sage wisdom in regular ol' non-union business practices as well.
 
You know, it may bruise your ego, but the fact of the matter is that the average line pilot really doesn't understand this stuff. And neither does the average status rep. It takes many years of experience, working alongside the attorneys and other excellent ALPA staff, to really learn how this stuff works. That's why Status Reps coming into town every two or three months and issuing orders doesn't work.
 
The pilots are smarter than you give them credit for, and that goes for the reps as well. You make it sound that only the great and powerful OZ can grant wishes.

If you can't deal with the rules or the players, then don't play the game. You may be ace of the base, but if you can't work with the other crew, then you are part of the problem, not the solution. There's no point in someone being "the smartest guy in the room" if no one will work with them because they are an intolerable twerp.

Something I learned over the years is to treat your rep like a family doctor. Touch base every once in a while, especially when nothing is on fire, figuratively. Then you don't have to worry about the "call your rep" because, chances are, he already knows how you feel about an issue and he knows that if you start an exchange, you're not the type that's going to start talking about chemtrails, gold and the Bildebergs at the tiniest brush with stress.

Luckily I've only given @Richman one "Crap, I've soiled myself" texts so far. Maybe two.
 
@sherpa managed to post such craziness that even @Cherokee_Cruiser looks sane by comparison, and I took him off the ignore list. Truly a sign of the apocalypse!

Something I learned over the years is to treat your rep like a family doctor. Touch base every once in a while, especially when nothing is on fire, figuratively. Then you don't have to worry about the "call your rep" because, chances are, he already knows how you feel about an issue and he knows that if you start an exchange, you're not the type that's going to start talking about chemtrails, gold and the Bildebergs at the tiniest brush with stress.

Heh, fortunately we think alike, so it's not any drama.

Anyway, it's critically important, as a rep, to make sure you're in the groove with the folks you represent. By the same token, you need to make sure you make as clear and clean as possible all the different variables when decision time comes.

People don't react well to start - hand waving - finish type processes. If you can't lay out the choices and the decision points and get everyone on board, or at least OK with the process, it's time to do something else.

It's also important to make sure EVERYONE gets their say and gets heard, especially those in the minority on an issue. People get really pissed when they get a "yea, I heard you. Here's a book, go color in the corner" response. Major tool points for anyone who blows off their peeps like that.

I'm not saying communication isn't important but it seems a bit extreme to start kicking people out (right before negotiations) because people's feathers are ruffled about not having enough communication. Esp when I haven't seen a lot of communication from the new folks. One thing I've also learned (in dealing with hoa's and various volunteering committees) is that everyone Wants change (and of course they could fo it better) but they want someone else to do it. Only time will tell now how bad this will be.......
