Speaking of Q400's...

Nevermind. After comparing our Q400 payscale to that of other comparable aircraft at other companies, why would anyone want to fly it here?

3rd yr, Captain Q400 at Colgan - $56/hr
3rd yr, Captain Xjet ERJ 145 - $64/hr
3rd yr, Captain Horizon Q400 - $69/hr

Wow! I'm guessing Colgan mamgement went off of ASA's $57/hr rate on the ATR's. That's B.S. man! 70+ seat flying is the same no matter if it's a TP or an RJ.

Not too bad. Do you know what starting FO pay is?

Not too bad? Hardly.

I'd make out better going to Xjet next year. I could upgrade in the same amount of time or less and make considerably more. I bet if Colgan really wanted pilots to stay longer then a year, they'd improve the compensation and benefits. But I guess the bottom dollar is more important than keeping employees on board. Unless we can get serious changes to pay with ALPA on board, I'll be sending resumes in January. $18k-23k is not a respectable wage for flying a 76 seater.

Your comparing a TP to a Jet and then to one of the highest paying regionals. Get what ya pay for I guess.

Why should the pay differ between props and jets? It should be based on the number of seats. At least its my understanding this is how it should be done. The ERJ-145 is a 50 seat jet, the Q400 is a 76 prop. Why should someone on an ERJ get paid more then someone on a Q400?

Not trying to get in a pissing match over it, but honestly I thought payscales were supposed to be based on aircraft size and number of seats, not complexity.

And Horizon is one of the top Regionals - but why should we operate the same aircraft for nearly half the cost? Oh wait, Jetblue and Skybus do that so I guess its okay.

I don't get why it should be based on pax. You have the same responsibility if you have 1 pax or 100 pax.

I agree with you completely - but unfortunately thats not the way it is. I always thought that the pay should be based not only on the complexity of the job, but also the responsibility placed on the crew.

A single engine Cessna carrying 2 people for charter can crash and nobody but the local paper knows about it. A 50 seat or 150 seat Airliner crashes and its national news.

My problem is - why should we operate an aircraft at half the pay as the other guys flying the same aircraft? This is what causes the downward turd spiral that this industry is in. How can you fight for better pay when "those guys" over there are flying for much less?

How about pay based on how much hand flying is done? lol

Honestly I could care less how my seats the plane has. I don't get it why people get all excited cause the 900 has 90 seats! Big deal, its the same up front.

Honestly I can't believe how low the pay, guess I just dont want to think about it

And Horizon's pay rates are exactly the reason why they haven't expanded in over 4 years. Now that Alaska's revenue is falling, I expect to see some budgeting being done by them.

I would like to see $60-65, competetive, but still enough money to buy the stuff we worked hard for.

Oh, I see what the problem is now. I can't believe that all FO wages are the same. Thats total BS IMO.

For captain, it didn't seem too too bad, but after seeing what you have to go (FO salary, a not good one) through....sheesh, its rough out there.

On another note, Isn't Horizons upgrade around 5 years? so would that mean 3 year CA, you would have to be there for 8 years?

Negative!

If you spend 3 years in the right seat and upgrade, you do it at 3 year captain pay. You don't loose time w/ the company because you upgraded.

Does that help?

This plane assures I always have a job and that the makers of Advil always have a steady stream of income.:laff:

lol true. I cant wait to transition over to the 400 its an awsome plane. However im not looking forward to all the mx it has.

Hmm budgeting we are actually spending, Q400's for Q200's plus efb's in all a/c. I expect to see the contract in negoation for the next 5 years. After what happened over at Alaska, no pay cuts for us. More that likely the pay rates will stay the same. We havent expanded for other reasons, not that we cant because of pay rates.

Not like i have a clue what the hell I'm talking about. . .BUT. . .

Perhaps pilots get all excited about seats because the company is making more on that flight (with 90 seats) than they would with 50 seats. Hence, each employee on that flight deserves a larger chunk of whatever funds are being made . . .

Just my thought. And - a thought I agree with. :)

that and the fact that there are more people you have to be concerned about. the more potential issues that can arrise. the odds increase with more people onboard. now i do not think the pay rates are great by any means for the 400's. they will not change though until there is one voice at colgan. as it has been said here before pilots are their own worst enemies.
