Southwest To Lower Minimums?

High TPIC guys run the gamut from "Awesome" all the way down to "You do understand that 'I don't know, he's the captain' doesn't jive at an administrative hearing".

You forgot the pitstops at "I was a captain for 18 years at XYZ and you're not doing it the way I'd do it." and "I am Col SkyGod, and you're just a scroungy looking, nerf-herding FLAP".

Oh lord.

I had a problem with an involuntary-reaction of doling out a backhand against the brow of my copilot whenever I heard, "Well… Back at Compass…"

I felt bad. I think I scared a few guys and even drew blood once. I couldn't control it.

I still owe @ian one for, ahem, taking bidding advice from other new hires.

I spoke with a southwest CA who told me they will likely drop the TPIC requirement altogether in the next year or so. The market will become pretty competitive for "tier 1" candidates come 2017.

And despite the apparent lack of career progression, I still meet many pilots who say that's where they want to end up. So I can't imagine they have a lack of applicants.

At a presentation over at WIA this year, a recruiter said that they are keeping the TPIC because they didnt want a new captains first ever PIC experience to happen at the controls of a SWA 737. Which made sense to me.

Really? Because that's exactly the case with me. I think it all worked out just fine. Also, the founder of this website, his 1st TPIC gig is in an Airbus 320...scary stuff!

Thanks for that! While the "minimums" might change in the future, I imagine most of the people getting the call will have in excess of 1000TPIC.

For what it's worth, Alaska has no published TPIC minimum, however they're telling people you need 1500 to get a look (up from 1000 the last time I talked to a recruiter). I've heard it suggested that the reason is to get certain people in the door. Nepotism, former interns, known quantities, etc. Could be the same with Southwest. Who knows.

Got a buddy of mine who left a very so-so commuter gig for a much better one. It was short notice, so he finished his trip, and then split for home to pack for training.

He sold his hat to a guy going to upgrade in the terminal on the way to non-rev home.

He's my hero.

Ahem.

By the way, it's "Air (space) Lines" in your latest update. Yeah yeah, blah blah blah, back at Northwest, it was "Airlines" but shut yower hole. :)

In 2014 there were 4 people in my class with no TPIC at all.

Out of the fifteen civilians in my new hire class I think I was the only one that had actually upgraded at an airline.

Exactly, and just about everyone's first turbine pic experience from that class will be on a 757, 737, MD 88, 717, A320 you name it.
