Southern Air fined $400k for safety

For WacoFan.

I was protected because I had raised the issue and was threatend with my job to complete the trip. In 121 or 135 operations the company pays the fines. But yes, I still could have been violated. If a mishap would have taken place I likely could have lost all my certificates.

Just to make a point,

If I recall the reg correctly (too lazy to look it up atm) it reads, no company shall, and no pilot may accept, a duty period in violation of required rest. As always, the Devil is in the details - this, by my interpretation, says that the company is a fault, but the pilot is also at fault for accepting the scheduling. So you could potentially find yourself in trouble, IF YOU ACCEPTED THE ASSIGNMENT.

Now I would hope that someone bringing this up to the FAA as a whistle-blower would be protected.

Oh and thanks for telling your story Air21WB, it's important that people speak up about this stuff.

Why thank you Boris. I will keep doing that. Not just for me but for all.
We are operating in tough times and airlines are coercing their pilots to commit more and more unsafe acts at the crews expense. As I visit more and more sites and blogs, the stories are growing in number. But not all companies are bad. There are a few that have actually gone to their employees encouraging their input with out reprisal. Why? Because they have realized that they have gotten caught up in the crisis of increasing revenue.

I hardly think that it was in the interest of turning down revenue. But I believe they had assessed the risk and found the cost of an accident to be far more than the cost of doing things safely and in compliance. Breaking the error chain is in every ones interest.

Folks Fly safe and keep the dirty side pointing down

Ok, heres my concern, what happens now? I don't mean to be a debbie downer, but are you likekly going to be able to find employment somewhere else? I'm sure it plays a factor in hiring a pilot. I've always thought that even if you are right, and you win, then what? You can't find a flying job elsewhere. Aviations a small world.
