Some post career fair observations from a friend

Oh god, you're bringing me flashbacks to a 11 week debacle trying to get an ALPA email account created for a volunteer of mine with what I would have thought is a very unique name and it turned out there's one at United and another one somewhere else, leading to believe individuals that said email was already created when in fact it was not. It went on for way too long. If he had been "Mike Smith" or "Bob Jones" I think I would have figured out the problem earlier, but playing email tag and his not actually that unique name, it was a charlie foxtrot...

This can't be, I thought you said earlier in another thread that Delta runs a basic quals check on the career expo pilots with slots to make sure they meet the mins? Anyway, any juicy stories? What do you mean by don't be entitled during an expo fair? What's an example, like a DCI guy saying why aren't you calling me cause I'm already flying your passengers? What would be the worst your friend might have heard?

Nah, but to answer your questions, it was overwhelmingly the best group my friend has seen in years. Like incontestably the highest quality set of applicants because, for the vast majority, people followed instructions.

Depends on the entirety of the application. Some people are going to have extended periods of time between enrolling and graduating largely because of financial reasons, personal reasons, etc. Describe it on your application.

The online degree thing is something being further discussed this week.
 
I finished my degree online with the Erby Diddle Aeromagical School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Online degrees CAN be quite good and legit, depending on the school - for me, it just worked out great because I'd be flying a 206 in Hawaii or Florida between the various weeks and I could still work on homework in the evenings (and thanks to E-textbooks which were in infancy, sometimes even not have to lug around a gigantic textbook.) I'm one of those people that can read the textbook, understand the concepts, take a test and do well. I don't know if it would work as well for everybody, because different students have different learning styles obviously, but in my case it was a good match. I don't need to sit in a lecture while people ask question after question that I already have answered because I read the textbook, watched the videos, etc. Same thing applies to aviation training, really - a CBT is a terrific tool and infinitely better than trying to stay awake while somebody drones on about systems that I already understand from RTFM.
I understand your need to weed out fake, unaccredited online degrees where I can get my masters at the same time I get my cat ordained, but you can't paint all online schools by the same broad brush.
 
Well there are some good online schools and some "Grand Cayman Meth Lab and Degree Foundry" online schools. The challenge is creating a solid method of differentiating between the two.

I realize there are bad accreditation bodies out there, but for the most part, isn't this what accreditation is for?

If there is something, will it be posted on the DPR facebook page? I'd be interested to see if the online universities alpa ffd has been advertising to "finish up your degree" will be satisfactory.

The first online degree I did a class or two with lost accreditation and I was part of the class action against them. (Mountain State University). Probably will get $3.50 cents in a check in 5 years. Hardly will make up for the couple thousand I lost for a couple classes.

Just wanted to throw it out there not to argue, but just to show they maintain “some” level of checking.

Perhaps. I'd imagine that'd be a week of entertaining drama from the followers and threats of lawsuits from the institutions deemed "diploma mills".
