Some pics from yesterday:

Plus, the dorks at the city decided to do some renovations to the airport during the peak travel season so the AC's out in most of the B concourse.

I was unlucky enough to have B4 as my gate for both of my flights down to PBI for some beach time and back home to PHL last week. I found myself standing in front of those little stupid portable AC's they have down there now the whole time!

Oh Doug on your ATL bid package did the forget to include time for summer thunderstorms. The boomers are just starting and will be here until sept. Man I love the south.

have any more info on this? I mean, isnt this a major emergency? sorry to bug you, but its interesting and sounds like a job well done to get the plane on the ground!

Well, apparently it was a no flap, crank-down-the-gear landing. Fortunately, on this aircraft type, all of the pitch and roll controls are non-hydraulic control tabs. I guess the runway closure was to look for FOD because when this aircraft type lands with zero hydralics, the landing gear doors don't retract after extending.

And seeing what happened to the Concorde a few years ago, FOD and runways are a big risk.

[/ QUOTE ]

Interesting! Glad to hear it went well though. How often do the hydraulics fail like that? Has it ever happened any of you guys?

Tim, you work the supertug, don't ya? We brought in a ferried jet from JAN and took it over to Delta North so I was bugging the MX guys over the intercom about "Hey, any of you folks know a Tim?"

Already used to it!!!!

If the American is going to ORD they're just moving him out to between the runways so he can park behind the UAL 737 and shutdown engines.

Bad as ATL is ORD seems to be worse.

Got to divert to BHM last Sunday when a slow moving boomer decided to park just off the west end of the runways in ATL. I think we were the first to refuse the approach. Lots and lots of lightning on short final, I don't think so.

Not enough fuel to wait it out so off to BHM we go, first of 6 or 7 to divert there. Boy if you have to do it you want to be first in and first out. No telling how long some of them were stuck there. Let the summer games begin!

Doug,
Awesome pics!! I love pics of ATL. I bet the congestion drives you crazy, but for all of my college buddies we love it. Would you believe that we actually drive 1.3 hours a couple times a month to spot on that berm along rwy 8L/26R??

If you have anymore...please share

I was on a flight yesterday to IAH whose original departure time was 1540. Along come some TS and IAH is on a ground hold. Our actual wheels up? 2113. At least we didn't have to divert. And, at least the wait was spent in the terminal and not on the aircraft.

direct entry, standard turns, EFC tomorrow when I got off.

And I queried the controller the other day in Allentown "still there??" and got a "this is the calm before the storm."

I failed to catch his "double meaning"

Yeah Doug I am over there..I have been out of work since sunday( in hospital). Our office is at the north end of the hanger there...Wish I knew that you were coming over and when i was.. Could have gave you a lift back over to the line

R2F,
If memory serves, isn't that from Sesame Street?
I'm sure you'll get used to it, bud - R2Fjr will be watching only a few shows in a few years: Sesame Street and Spongebob.

There aren't many shows that appeal to both older and younger people; the only two that come to mind are Sesame St. and The Simpsons.

Did you depart 17 out of jyo straight towards dulles? i assume it was before the adiz? its a real pain now b/c potomac sometimes doesnt monitor clearance delivery and i have to wait forever to get through to get a code. it is pretty wild though. that class b shelf is only 1500 ft msl. field elevation is 300...we were in the pattern the other day and a jet blue a319 passed overhead no more than a 1000 above. pretty cool stuff.

[/ QUOTE ]

I seem to recall departing runway 35, but it's really been a while. And yes, this was before the whole ADIZ fiasco. I'd hate to operate out of there now.

Hey Doug how often do you actually have to hold? My guess is you'd probably just slow down in advance of the hold and by the time you get there you can just keep on going, either that or get a ground hold somewhere.

Got the visual both in ATL and IAD. But the traffic was nil last night. Just us, a huge Speedbird 747-400 and a freight Baron with real trippy anticollision lights.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hey doug, when will you get cleared visual approach? When you can see the rwy? What about if ILS is in use, can you still request visual, and vice-versa?

Thanks mate

Hey Doug, also i forgot, what are the pictures of?
I can see a heap of aircraft awaiting departure, what about the other pic of the computer screen?
Is that a holding pattern? How does that work? keep flying in circles?

The vis is always a possibility when the ceilings are more than 1000 and the visibility is more than 3 miles. I think that's right, it's late and I'm sick. You can request the visual (at least under Part 91) whenever those conditiong exist and you can remain clear of clouds. I've seen the runway more than 10 miles out on a clear day before. I can only imagine what kind of visibility guys at altitudes higher than 8,000 can get.

I'd say about every third leg into ATL I have to hold.

Generally it's about a 20 minute hold, followed by a strange vector out of the hold, then box patterns for another 15 minutes and then being cleared direct to the ATL VORTAC.

Holding aircraft counts against the sector, but then when they're giving you vectored box patterns, it just counts as vectors to the final approach course and doesn't affect their arrival rate statistics -- which is dangerous. Because when we're in the hold, we're able to monitor our "gasahohl" pretty closely to see if we're at the point where we're going to have to divert. But when we're getting vectors, it's a little harder to ascertain when we're at the point to necessitate heading to an alternate airport.

Thanks guys.
I was listening to Adelaide Approach the other day when i visited Adelaide, and heard a Virgin BLue inbound (737)
ATC asked weather they could increase speed, or else theyll be required to hold...
They said how much do you need?
ATC came back with "about 30-40KTS"
They said theyll just hold...
ATC then gave instructions along the lines of...Virgin 123, enter the hold at Modbury"
Does that then mean they fly in loops overhead modbury?

Thanks again. ALso, is there a specific alt you hold at?

Cheers

Uggghhh! I was jumpseating on one of our Lear 35's back to CMH from ORL with a stop in ATL to pick up some cargo. We left ORL at 1500 local and usually get to ATL no later than 1620 local. Not today! It took us until 1720 to get there because we were in a holding pattern over SINCA Int. for nearly an hour. I guess there was a thunderstorm over the field. Figures!

This event turned into a 45 minute wait sitting on a taxiway, waiting to depart behind 15 Delta jets! Thanks Doug! LOL! Anyways, we had one engine shutdown during the wait and could not run the air conditioner, so we opened the door. Ground control politely advised us it was open to which we responded that we were well aware and we needed it to stay cool during our wait! Some Delta guy chimed in and said, "I remember those days!"
