Be glad you're not doing much Salt Lake flying anymore- we'll be seeing a lot of the above here! They've closed the center runway for construction. I held over the Bonneville salt flats for 30 min becuase of a scattered TCUs over the valley at TEN THOUSAND FEET!

R2F,
If memory serves, isn't that from Sesame Street?
I'm sure you'll get used to it, bud - R2Fjr will be watching only a few shows in a few years: Sesame Street and Spongebob.

There aren't many shows that appeal to both older and younger people; the only two that come to mind are Sesame St. and The Simpsons.

Hey Doug, how far from upgrade do you think you are?

I have no idea, but it's not going to be any time soon!

Ugh, last night Bill tried to commute down to CVG for his 0505 show this morning. When he got out of the truck a commuting Delta FA saw him (he was in uniform) and told him the flight cancelled. It was the last flight for the night, so he got to come home, get in his car, and drive the 5 hours to work!

Nothing like pulling an all-nighter before a 4-leg day! At least he's not based in ATL, or the driving would not have been an option and he'd a been really screwed!

Looks like it was a pretty lousy day all across the DL system!

Monster thunderstorms west of the airport and we were doing that wonderful "east operation" where you've got massive backups on the taxiways.

Plus, the dorks at the city decided to do some renovations to the airport during the peak travel season so the AC's out in most of the B concourse.

Then another aircraft came with with a hydraulic failure and it shut down a runway for almost an hour so the south complex was down to a single runway operation.

Our last leg was a IAD turn and even at 11pm, we still had an hour gate hold. But once we were on the arrival, we're 10,000 feet on downwind and approach asks, "Hey, ya got the airport? Cleared for the visual!"

Good to finally be home.

doug, how long were ya in dulles? thats my stomping grounds. where did you get that visual? atl or iad?

Got the visual both in ATL and IAD. But the traffic was nil last night. Just us, a huge Speedbird 747-400 and a freight Baron with real trippy anticollision lights.

have any more info on this? I mean, isnt this a major emergency? sorry to bug you, but its interesting and sounds like a job well done to get the plane on the ground!

Have you seen JYO--leesburg executive. on departure from 1left with a left turnout you overfly the field depending on what heading you take. its about 10 miles nw of iad. thats my little airport. on ifr departures from runway 17 at jyo they ask if you are able to make an immediate right turn as soon as practical due to departing and arriving iad traffic.

I flew out of JYO once VFR, and that got pretty hairy. I'd never been denied clearance into the Class B that quickly.

Well, apparently it was a no flap, crank-down-the-gear landing. Fortunately, on this aircraft type, all of the pitch and roll controls are non-hydraulic control tabs. I guess the runway closure was to look for FOD because when this aircraft type lands with zero hydralics, the landing gear doors don't retract after extending.

And seeing what happened to the Concorde a few years ago, FOD and runways are a big risk.

Did you depart 17 out of jyo straight towards dulles? i assume it was before the adiz? its a real pain now b/c potomac sometimes doesnt monitor clearance delivery and i have to wait forever to get through to get a code. it is pretty wild though. that class b shelf is only 1500 ft msl. field elevation is 300...we were in the pattern the other day and a jet blue a319 passed overhead no more than a 1000 above. pretty cool stuff.
