Social Media and the job hunt.

To some people this career is a game or a reddit post. I'd hate to tell my grandkids that I didn't get on at a legacy because I scored mad internet points on The Facebook.

Problem is, this whole thing is a twisted game. Job fairs, volunteering, master degrees , how many LORs you can come up with. Dance dance dance, smile, don't show too much teeth, say only certain things, iron your tie, how many meet and greets have you been to this year?

I take my job seriously as a profession and I take the job hunt very seriously, but sometimes when I step outside of myself and look back into what we all have to do to get a career job I scratch my head at what we have to do to get noticed even in 2017. I think a lot of this lashing out especially on social media, are from people that are sick of playing the game and losing.

He got hired at Delta a couple years back. He's a good guy, don't get me wrong and I'm sure he's learned a ton from this incident and has matured and moved on.

But the conflicting message it sends saying that Delta google's an applicants name and look at social media. Google that pilot's name, and you will see pages of articles of naked romps, arrested, flight attendant, wrist watch, flip flops. But clearly in this case, it didn't matter. So you get applicants out there who will look at this case and say all I did was make a cake joke or binding suggestions, and I'm out?

He clearly had the TMAAT story of all time. So much win!

Meh. I had that FA on a TVC overnight once and our CA was DH back to DTW so it was just the two of us going to the hotel. The way she acted and the things she would say..... lets just say she wouldn't have been hard to score. I was engaged and wanted no part of it. I got the feeling she would go around easy, and that's just not my kinda thing even if I was single. Like that old airline saying: if the FA is easy to score, you weren't the first pilot hitting the homerun there!

The standards are quickly falling though, my man. I'm flying with ever more captains who are just normal dudes being interviewed. No line check status, no figher pilot/astronaut time, no volunteering at all (I asked, haha). Just flew with a guy who is off to Delta next month and another average guy about to be interviewed by FedEx; nothing too exciting about their background. Both only had one type-rating, as well. Notice I wrote "guy" too, as in male. Haha this game is fast being won by the pilots.

Ive literally done none of those things and I’ve gotten called by everyplace I’ve ever applied.

There's a pretty big gap between being frustrated and showing your ass on Facebook.... and a lot of people showed their ass.

Seriously, that is NOT what I was alluding to, that he just hooked up in the woods. Leaving the seedy part out, he obviously was able to overcome a huge setback and could speak to many things learned from it.

Because he was given a chance by being called for an interview. How many pilots have apparently tanked themselves from hiring committees at legacy airlines simply because of what you can find on a candidate by googling them or checking Facebook? You have to admit, this guy got a very lucky break considering the tons of crap that comes up when you google that name.

You’ve probably done more than you think, it’s just organic for you so you don’t have to think about it.

I’ve volunteered for several different organizations because I like doing it, so it’s in my resume but not only to get me a job.

Yea I volunteer it just doesn’t show up on my application. I’ve brought it up in interviews...which sidebar I’m horrible at interviews.
