SoCal Flight Schools

Yea, you really learn one item well. "Hold for landing traffic."

My average wait time has to be less than a minute in the last year. A couple years ago it was a bit bad but things have slowed down. With a dozen airports withing 15 minutes though, there are lots of options if all 3 of the available runways are busy.

I teach freelance at LGB and just opened a new FBO/flight school. The paint still hasn't dried yet on the office but we've got G1000 172's for $130/hour and a nice Archer III for $120. We hope to be adding a 152 and a Tampico by the end of next week. We'd love to have you come down and have a look around at what we have to offer.

Blue Skies!

Where are you guys located? Is that where N1484B went?

Were leasing an office on the south west corner of the field near CFC and LBFC, were on the airport side of the Rainbow Air building. Yes, we have 84B for $135/hour now. It just wasn't flying enough at the old location and the owner needed it flown more.

I'm building the website right now and were still finishing the office. When it is done and the office is finished we plan to have some sort of open house. I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to post up here about it though, I might need to buy some add space from Doug. ;)

Universal Air Academy at KEMT is also a good place to rent.

Cessna 152's for 85
Cessna 172's for 95
Warrior 1 for 90...what I rent
Warrior 2 for 95...also what I rent
Archer 2 for 98

etc....

I haven't flown 1RJ nor have I heard about it having radio problems. 866 though is a really good workhorse, flown it once and it was rock solid. Except for the landing coz i smacked it on the runway, typical for a low winger like me trying to fly high wing eh?

Like others have said, make sure you shop for instructors as well. I personally would try and avoid the bigger airports (LGB, SNA) if you can. You'll end up wasting a lot of time and money waiting to takeoff and land. Since you're close to El Monte and Pomona, go check them out. I remember both having excellent flight schools and FBO's on the field.

I always hear these types of comments about LGB. I'm just curious when was the last time you spent any time in the pattern at any of the aforementioned mentioned airports?

Gonna be visiting some of the schools next week listed here, made an Excel spreadsheet comparing the prices and details as well haha. Again, appreciate all the recommendations and information regarding LGB and area facilities everyone.

Angel City Flyers is not the cheapest but they are awesome. I completed my PPL there a couple of weeks ago: structured program, excellent instructors, aircraft always available when needed, very professional. I trained intensively and it took 26 days (and 45 hours) from first lesson to passing my checkride. I would not consider myself a "natural" at all - although I can study hard when needed! - so credit is due to the school :D Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Like you, I was unsure whether LGB was too busy and complex to learn but I'd recommend it: you get good experience with airports, traffic, and radio work, and I'd second codyjp (hello Cody!) and crfguy51's comments that there is rarely a wait to take-off. As he says, there are three other airports in the area (plus two runways for light aircraft at LGB) so lots of options.

Well LGB has been quite a few years, so things may have changed.......Bottom line is, make sure you don't only look at the hourly rate for the airplane. Ask current customers about the instructors, maintenance, and airport congestion. Those three things will determine how much you'll really end up spending for your certificates....

LGB is a really good place for training. It isn't the busy airport that ppl make it out to be. I spent a bulk of training hours there when I was working on my PPL. I remember once, when the airport wasn't busy, the tower let us land on 30 make a left on 25L keep it rolling, takeoff and then turn downwind for 30. I managed like 8 takeoffs and landings within 15 mins. :rawk:

When it gets busy tho, be prepared. I have once been #3 to land on 25L with another 4 planes in the pattern for 25R while the big boys use 30. Also, expect LAHSO instructions...
