So, how bad is your carrier melting down...

I've jumpseated in about 4 airplanes now and none are comfortable. The seatbacks are vertical with no ability to recline and there's often no place for your feet. Except for I think the MD-80? which has the same model of foot stirrups often seen in gynecology offices...

But hey, its a free ride so whatever...

See also what @ChasenSFO said, though. I haven't been asked, ever on my RJ deadheads and GENERALLY it wouldn't help on the real airplane either, so yeah.

(If they don't know to ask, and most of our agents either do not know, or know and won't, I'm not tellin'.)

Thats funny... We're asked, or told to ride in the JS all the time...

I was born at the old Naval Hospital in Lemoore. I finally got to go back several years ago when my ex-brother in-law was at VFA-146. Oceana is nice. I did my sea duty over at NAS Norfolk. Having grown up in San Diego, it was the pretty much same; lots of bases close together, lots of military, only exception was it not being SoCal. I wouldn't mind moving back one day, its a nice area when you get out of the city.

Yeah there are a lot of similarities between the two bases, though I avoid Norfolk/NOB like the plague

The biggest thing I hated about that base was if you got a speeding ticket on base, not only did you loose points, but you had to go to downtown Norfolk to pay the stupid thing and it went against your insurance! Exchange is nice though!

Who are the gate agents at the stations this is happening at? Skywest gate agents are few and far between East of DEN, many contracted folks don't hardly have a single policy down and likely wouldn't know and just make you do that to alleviate their stress during an over sale. And mainline United agents...well...they probably know and don't care. Either way, seeing OO captains reactions to gate agents trying to put a guy on a dead head up front, I'm surprised they let the gate agents do this to you.

A prime example why an airline is really throwing away service when they contract ground handling to the lowest bidder.

At my station we've been briefed never to ask a DH to jump-seat. Usually if we need to deny boarding (Has only happened once and WOW did this lady freak out), I just grab my sup and have her do the rest. Thank god for these next few days off because last week was freekin hell man.

In some airplanes, you're basically sitting in a A/V closet.

My hierarchy (after WAY too many years of commuting) from worst to best...

737 Secondary
CRJ/ERJ
Dash8 (old school... Never jumpseated on a Q)
737 Primary/MD8X
Airbus 32X Secondary
757 "perch"
717
Airbus 32X Primary
330/340/Secondary (it's very strange because you sit half sideways)
747
777 Secondary
767/757 Center seat (bonus points if it's one of the ones that rotates and reclines)
777 Primary
330/340 Primary
Company 330 bunk on non augmented flights

I've sat in a 727 jumpseat on the ground and found it pretty comfortable but was only in it for about 20 minutes and was busy looking around at all the round shiny dials.

I wouldn't wish the ERJ j/s on my worst enemy. Best jumpseat I ever rode was the 777 secondary from HNL-SFO. Can't even call it a jumpseat. It's just like an economy plus/business class seat placed in the spacious cockpit.

There is a difference between currency and proficiency though.

Yup. From what I hear, a lot of guys that end up getting reassigned into the right seat just have the guy in the left seat take all the legs. It's easier to remember what knob goes where and when (because you should know that anyway, especially after 6-7 years in the right seat of the same aircraft) than it is to remember how to land from the other seat.

At UA and the UAX carriers, gate agents were not allowed to put active duty positive space crew members in the jumpseat. I'd be shocked if any carrier allows this...

UAX gate agents ask us to do this at XJT on a regular basis, unfortunately. And unfortunately for them, I politely decline.

XJT captains are kept current in both seats so that they can be reassigned to fly pairings in either seat as the company's needs dictate.

That is only on the ERJ side. Not allowed in CRJ contract. Another concession with this garbage TA.

It's annoying for captains, but I'm not entirely sure how it's a concession.

Now it might be a safety issue, but how would it be a concession?
